WhatsApp doesn’t really make it obvious how to log out of it – in fact, there isn’t technically a function to do so, not without deleting your account completely. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done, though – it just takes a few extra steps.
The steps in question depend on your operating system.
Tip: Whether you are using Android or iOS, we recommend that you back up your chats before you log out so you can get your chats back later if you log back in on another (or even the same) device.
How to log out on Android:
To log out of your WhatsApp account, you don’t actually need to open WhatsApp, but rather your phone settings. Tap the settings icon and scroll down to Apps. You’ll see a very long list of all the apps installed on your phone.
Scroll all the way down to WhatsApp and tap on it. You’ll see a whole list of settings – the one you need is Storage. Tap it and you’ll see two options at the bottom – Clear cache and Clear data.
Here, you need to tap the Clear data option. You’ll be prompted to confirm the deletion of everything, account data and other associated content. Do so, and you will be logged out of WhatsApp. The app won’t be uninstalled, instead it will simply prompt you to log in when next you launch it. You can log in with the same details or a different number – it’s up to you!
How to log out on iOS:
In order to log out of WhatsApp on your Apple phone, you’ll have to uninstall the app entirely. To do so, close the app and then tap and hold the app symbol on your screen. A new menu will pop up – the top option will be Delete app. Tap it and confirm the deletion of your app.
How to log out of WhatsApp Web:
WhatsApp Web is the only WhatsApp version that actually lets you log out quickly and easily. To do so, all you have to do is go to the tab on your computer, click on the three dots at the top right side of the chat list, and select Log out.
4The Log out optionTip: Simply closing the tab is NOT enough! If another user reopens it or navigates back to it, they could still have access to your chats. Always log out properly.
Alternatively, you can also log out of WhatsApp Web on your phone if you don’t have access to the browser. To do so, open WhatsApp on your phone and select WhatsApp Web (either via the three-dot menu on Android or via the Settings button on iOS).
You’ll see a list of all your current active logins, and to log out of one (or all of them) tap the relevant button there.
