You may want to reset the Plays counter column on a music file that keeps track of how many times you play a file in Apple iTunes. Here’s how.
Note: This feature has been removed with version iTunes 12.4. Many users have voiced frustration with this features removal and it may make a comeback in future versions.
For the technically savvy MacĀ users, there is a script available that will reset the play count.
Follow these steps for older versions of iTunes:
- From the “Songs” list, select the music tracks you wish to reset. You can even select multiple tracks and apply the reset to more than one track. To select all tracks, choose “Edit” > “Select All” or hold “Control” and press the “A” key.
- Right-click any of the highlighted tracks and a menu will appear. Single mouse button users can hold “Control” while clicking the highlighted item to make the menu appear.
- Select “Reset Plays“.
- A dialog will appear. Confirm your action by selecting “Reset“.
The “Plays” count is reset.

Select all the songs you want to reset. Put your cursor on the ” … ” of one of the selected songs . Click and select “Get Info” or “Song Info” if you only have one song selected. Near the bottom you will find a beautiful sight. “play count -” with a “Reset” button. Bingo!!!
