Discord is a free communications app designed for gamers. It allows text, voice, and video chats and supports private messages, group messages, and servers. While private group messages can be an effective way to communicate with a small group of friends, setting up a server allows for far more flexibility. With a free Discord server, you can configure an unlimited number of text and voice channels, create permission groups, integrate bots, upload custom emoji, and more. There’s also no limit on the number of people you can have in your server.
Creating a new server
To create a new Discord server, you need to open Discord, then click the green plus icon near the bottom of the server list on the left of the app.
Tip: The server creation process is the same on all platforms, including mobile.
You’ll be asked if you want to create a new server or if you’re wanting to join an existing one. Click “Create a server” to create a new server.
Next, you’ll be asked to name your new server, and to create a server icon. Discord will suggest a default name of “<your-username>’s server” and put those initials in the icon. Just replace the server name with whatever you want to call your server. To change the server icon, you need a static JPG, PNG, or GIF that is at least 128×128 pixels in size.
Tip: While you can upload an animated gif as the server icon, only a still image will be used. Animated server icons are supported if you use two Discord server boosts, although this is a paid feature.
Inviting people to your new server
By default, your server will be created with one voice and one text channel, both named “General”. In the text channel, you’ll see a welcome message that provides a link to Discord’s “getting started guide”. It also provides an easy way to invite your friends, you can do so by clicking the “Invite your friends” button.
To invite your friends, you just need to send them the invite link. They may need to create a username or an account to join but the process is really simple. While there are many more server settings you can choose to configure, you’re now ready to start using your server.
Tip: To edit your server settings, click on the server name in the top-left corner, and then on “Server Settings”.
