When looking for a VPN, most people will have an idea of the key features that they want. A general preference, though, is for the service to be as reasonably priced as possible. The cheapest option isn’t necessarily the best, nor, for that matter, is the most expensive, and free VPNs usually have some sort of catch. A breakdown of prices can make it easier to see which service is a good deal and which is too pricy for what’s on offer.
The table below has been compiled with the prices for the longest available subscription for a sample of fifteen VPN providers. This price will be broken down into monthly cost, for ease of comparison. The cost, however, is required to be paid upfront, rather than as a monthly subscription. Prices are accurate as of late May 2020. Most of these services also offer a month-to-month or similar subscription plan, which tends to be significantly more expensive – paying as much as $10 for a single month isn’t unheard of.
VPN Provider | Subscription cost | Duration of subscription | Equals a monthly price of |
SurfShark | $69.99 | 3 years | $1.94 |
Trust.Zone | $55.99 | 2 years | $2.33 |
VyprVPN | $60.00 | 2 years | $2.50 |
CyberGhost | $99.00 | 3 years | $2.75 |
TunnelBear | $120.00 | 3 years | $3.33 |
NordVPN | $125.64 | 3 years | $3.49 |
HideMyAss | $143.64 | 3 years | $3.99 |
AVG Secure VPN | $143.64 | 3 years | $3.99 |
Avast SecureLine VPN | $143.64 | 3 years | $3.99 |
Windscribe | $49.00 | 1 year | $4.08 |
Hide.me | $129.95 | 2 years | $4.99 |
IPVanish | $77.99 | 1 year | $6.49 |
ProtonVPN | $159.00 | 2 year | $6.63 |
Hotspot Shield | $95.88 | 1 year | $7.99 |
ExpressVPN | $99.95 | 1 year | $8.33 |
The average monthly price for these 15 example VPNs is $4.45. The most expensive services are the ones that offer a maximum of a one-year subscription. The prices on these one-year deals are so much higher than other providers, that they significantly change the average monthly cost. Only two VPN providers that offer a package longer than one year have a monthly cost above the average value. If we only take into account VPN providers that offer multi-year plans, the average cost of a VPN drops to just $3.63 a month – often this includes the use of multiple devices, though that does depend on the provider.
For those not living in the US, you may find that many VPN providers offer prices in your local currency. These prices may be close to the value in US dollars, after allowing for exchange rates, however, some providers may not do this. For instance, even though the currencies do not exchange one-to-one, ProtonVPN offers the exact same price of 6.63 per month, in three currencies: US Dollars, Euros, and Swiss Francs.
