Gmail not getting emails? Try these useful tips

Posted on August 6, 2021 by Judy Sanhz Leave a Comment

There are some services that you might take for granted, and Gmail is one of them. Since it hardly fails, you think it’s always going to do what it’s supposed to. But, there comes a time when it fails in some way, for example, when it’s not showing you emails others have sent you.

When Gmail fails, there are some tips you can try to get it working again. But, before you get into any troubleshooting tips, it’s always a good idea to check that it’s not Google that’s having the problem. Keep reading to see how you can do this and the tips you can try if the issue is on your end.

How to Fix Gmail Not Getting Emails

As I mentioned earlier, before you get into any troubleshooting tips, it’s best to see if Google has the problem. Google has a dashboard where you can check if any of Google’s services are failing.

If all is well, you’ll see a checkmark to the right of the service; if you see anything else, you know what that means. It could also be the app and not Gmail; that’s why you could also try to access your Gmail account from your preferred browser or another device.

It could also be that those emails have gone to the Spam folder, and that’s why you can’t find them. You can try removing the Google account that’s giving you problems and adding back. You can do this by going to your device’s Settings, followed by Accounts. Choose the account you want to remove and select the Remove Account button.

Once the account is gone, it’s time to add it again. To do this by opening your Gmail app and tapping on your profile picture. Tap add another account > Google and add the info for the account you want to add. After that, you only need to follow the on-screen instructions.

Check the Filters

If you were playing around with Gmails filters and didn’t really know what you were doing, you might have changed something accidentally. Go to Gmail and click on the cogwheel at the top right to see if everything is in order. Click on See all settings.

Next to the Select option, click on the All option, followed by the Delete option. You’ll see a confirmation message to delete your filter; click ok, and your filters will be gone. Refresh Gmail to see if you have any new emails.

Gmail Not Syncing

If you’re experiencing sync issues, that could explain why you’re not getting your messages. You can fix this by updating the Gmail app. There’s also the possibility that the Sync option in Settings is not on. To check, open the Gmail app and tap on the three-lined menu at the top left, and go to Settings. Choose the account that’s giving you problems and swipe down until you come across the Sync option. Tap on the box to enable it, and there should be a checkmark there now.

There’s also the classic tip of rebooting your Android device and make sure you have connectivity. Sometimes, you think that you’re Internet connection will never fail, but it can, and it will.

You can also try clearing the cache for the Gmail app. To do this, go to Settings > Apps and Notifications > See all x apps > Gmail > Storage and Cache > Clear Cache.

Put Gmail on Your AntiViruses Whitelist

Antiviruses do a great job of keeping your computer safe. But, sometimes they do a tad bit too well and start blocking services you know are safe to use. So you can also try putting Gmail on your antivirus’s allowlist so you can start getting your emails again.

If you’ve done that and it still blocks Gmail, you can disable it and use Windows Defender that doesn’t block Gmail and related services.

Free up Space on Gmail

Since the storage is shared between other Google services such as Google Drive and Google Photos, the reason why you’re not getting your email is that you’ve reached your limit. You can check to see if you’ve reached your limit by going to your account’s storage.

Turn off Email Forwarding

Just to be on the safe side, you can also try turning off email forwarding. You may have turned it on for some reason and forgot to erase it. To see if that’s the case, go to Gmails settings > See all settings > Forwarding and POP-map Tab > Turn off forwarding.

Conclusion

Not getting the emails you need can cause a lot of problems, especially if they are work-related. The cause of the problem can vary, but hopefully, the tips mentioned helped you fix the issue. One final tip can also be to use a VPN. Maybe, for some reason, your country has blocked Gmail. It’s worth a try.
