No one likes to think that one day the unthinkable might happen to them. But we’re all human, and you can pass away at any time. So, if you don’t want your account just sitting there with the risk of being hacked, there is something you can do to have Google erase the account for you.
Google has a service called Inactive Account Manager. It allows you to let someone know your account has been inactive for some time or share it with them. The process doesn’t take very long, and it gives you the peace of mind that if anything should happen to you, your account will be taken care of. You can even decide what information you want the added users to have.
How to Make Google Erase Your Account After a Period of Inactivity
To set up the Inactive Account Manager, you’ll need to visit the page Google has set up for this. To start the process, click on the blue start button. You’ll see your personal information on the next page, including your primary email address and the recovery email. You’ll also need to add a phone number if you haven’t done so already.
The default time for the period of inactivity will be set to three months by default. Click on the pencil icon to change the time. You can choose from times such as:
- Three months
- Six months
- Twelve months
- 18 months
The next step would be to choose up to 10 people to add to your trusted contacts list. These will be the people that Google notifies that your account has been inactive for the amount of time to set before. You can also set an auto-reply to let anyone who emails you to that account know that you’re no longer using it.
When you’ve added trusted contacts to the list, you can also decide what information you want to share with them. Check the boxes for the info you want to share, or you can click on the Select All option to speed things up.
Google will also ask you to add their number so they can be notified. There will even be an option to add a personal message if that’s something you want to do. If you ever change your mind and want to replace this person or even add someone else, you can. You’ll see a trash can icon to erase them, a pencil icon to change their email address, and the Add person icon to add someone else.
Once you’ve added all the necessary information, click on the blue next button at the bottom. If everything is ok, go ahead and click on the Turn on my plan button. Even at this point, Google lets you make changes to your plan. Scroll down, look over your information to see if anything needs to be changed.
The idea of passing away is not a happy one. Still, it’s important to leave everything in order if that should ever occur. That way, you can rest assured that what you want to be done with your information will be done. Do you find this Google service useful?
