Galaxy Note 8: Enable Split Screen Multi-Window Mode

Galaxy Note 8: Enable Split Screen Multi-Window Mode

April 10, 2019 by Mitch Bartlett 5 Comments

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has a feature that allows you to view multiple apps in split screen multi-window mode. Here’s how to enable it.

Android Pie

  1. Open the apps you wish to use as you normally would.
Note: The app must be one that supports multi-screen. Otherwise, you will get a message that the app “does not support split screen view”.
  2. Tap the “Recents” Android Pie Recents Button button. A list of your running apps will appear. Swipe left and right if you wish to explore between listed apps.
  3. Tap the app icon of the first app you would like to use in split-screen view. A menu will appear where you can select “Open in split screen view“.

  4. A circle with an “X” will appear at the top of the screen. Ignore it for now. Select the app you wish to use in the second window. You can select the app card from the “Recents” list or open the app from the launcher.

Both apps will now be displayed in the split-screen view.

Split Window View

  1. Open the apps you wish to use as you normally would.
Note: The app must be one that supports multi-screen. Otherwise, you will get a message that the app “does not support split screen view”.
  2. Tap the “Recents”  button. A list of your running apps will appear. Swipe up or down if you wish to explore between listed apps.
  3. Tap the multi-window icon located to the left of the X in the app window. It will open in the upper-half of the screen.
Note: Apps that do not have the multi-window icon cannot be run in split screen mode.

  4. Tap the multi-window icon (looks like an = sign) located at the upper-right corner of the app.
  5. Select another app to run both apps in split screen multi-window mode.

You can access additional multi-window options by tapping the circle in between the windows.

Exiting Split Screen

Ensure you have two apps running in split screen mode, then tap the middle of the middle bar that divides them. A menu should appear where you can select the X to exit Split Screen Mode. It may take a few tries.

Resizable Window Mode

  1. Open an app you wish to use as you normally would.
  2. Tap and hold the “Recents” Android Pie Recents Button button. A white circle with an “X” will appear. Tap it to exit Multi-Window Mode.

The app will show in a separate re-sizable window. You can now drag the corner to enlarge or reduce its size, or drag the window around the screen as desired.

FAQ

Why can’t I use split screen with some apps?

Some apps are not compatible with this feature. There is currently no workaround for this.

Before you could only do two apps open in split screen. now you can open in pop up view and have multiple ones open nad you can re-size them. I actually like this better.

Thank you so much for this. They should have left it how it was. I’ve been searching since the last update and I’m glad I found your post.

Yes! Thank you so much! I was so mad at these damn developers for changing everything and the split window was one of my favs.

I don’t understand why they do this, they move anything that was on top to the bottom, anything on the left to the right, etc. All to mess with us.
