One of the best reasons to use something like Android over iOS is due to the customization options. From adding custom and resizable widgets to changing the icons, and even swapping out your “stock” launcher for something entirely different, the possibilities are truly endless. If you’ve just picked up a Pixel 5 (or any Android phone), we’re going to go over the ins and outs for customizing your device.
The basics
Before you get started, it’s important to know exactly what you can do to customize your Home Screen. Without installing a single app, you can instantly change quite a few facets of what your Home Screen looks like.
How to add icons to the Home Screen
The simplest way to “customize” your Home Screen is by adjusting which applications are the easiest to access. With the inclusion of the App Drawer, you don’t need to have every app meticulously organized and categorized into folders. Instead, just add the apps that you care about the most, while keeping the other hidden away.
- Swipe up to open the App Drawer.
- Find the app you want to add to the Home Screen.
- Touch and hold the app.
- Drag and drop the app to your Home Screen.
How to add widgets
Widgets on Android are a bit different from those on iOS. There is much more that you can do with Android widgets. From being able to quickly skip songs on your playlist, to viewing your daily to-do list, widgets are more useful than you may realize.
- From the Home Screen, touch and hold on an empty space.
- Tap Widgets.
- Locate the widget you want to add.
- Drag and drop the widget on your Home Screen.
How to Change the Wallpaper
Another one of the simplest ways to personalize your Pixel 5 is to swap out the wallpaper. Google has included quite a few options to choose from. But you can also check out an app like Backdrops or Resplash to find even more.
- From the Home Screen, touch and hold on an empty space.
- Tap Styles & wallpapers.
- Scroll down to find the built-in wallpapers to choose from.
- Tap My Photos to select a wallpaper saved to your phone.
- Select the wallpaper you want to set.
- Tap the Check Mark icon in the bottom right-hand corner.
- Choose which wallpaper you want to set:
- Home Screen
- Lock Screen
- Home Screen and Lock Screen
Customize the icons
While you can’t change the icon themes on a Pixel 5 using the stock Launcher, you can change up the shapes. There are a few different options to choose from, while also being able to change up the system colors and a few of the system icons.
- From the Home Screen, touch and hold on an empty space.
- Tap Styles & wallpapers.
- Select Style from the bottom toolbar.
- Choose from the pre-populated options, or tap the + icon to create a Custom Style.
- Tap the Check Mark icon in the bottom right-hand corner.
