The new OnePlus 7T phone was first released in September of 2019. It promises a smooth experience, offering 8GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. But that isn’t even the most exciting part.
In 2019, OnePlus held a conference for developers in India. As a result, they have been actively working to create opportunities for open-sourced development. OnePlus followers want a chance to create custom developments, and the company has heard their cry.
The Latest Developments
In the short time since it has gone on the market, developers have already been working on creating both a custom ROM and a custom Kernel for the phone.
If you’re unfamiliar with these terms, Kernel is the program in your operating system that controls everything. This is the first program that will load after the bootloader. It takes care of several things, including memory, input and output, and system calls.
ROM stands for Read-Only Memory, and it is storage used in electronic devices. It is useful because it keeps the data stored safely, whether or not it has power.
The ROM Replacement
For a new ROM development, OmniROM is the result of an open-sourced project for developers from all levels. In this latest option to a standard ROM, OmniROM focuses on stability first for your device.
Currently, however, you’ll need a custom recovery package for flashing (or replacing) this new ROM in your OnePlus 7T. Because of this, the flashing process can be very difficult, making this option for expert level tech gurus only.
But if you’re able, OmniROM has its benefits. It allows you to choose your own Google apps package, customize your status bar, use voice commands, and a whole lot more.
The Kernel Replacements
OnePlus’ excited community of developers have come out with a couple different Kernel options. Also best for experts right now, the Blu_Spark Kernel boasts a long list of fixes and updates. A few of them include a custom toolchain, multiple CPU Governors, Backlighting features, and a USB fast charging option.
The ElementalX kernel has a few similarities to Blu_Spark, but also offers better battery life, color controls, adjustable vibrations, and wireguard support. Both options are excellent, leaving you to choose the Kernel that’s right for you.
Unbricking Solutions
Now, what if you choose to flash your ROM or try another update, but something goes wrong? These genius developers have been working on that too. When your phone stops working after you’ve tried flashing, it becomes bricked. In order to fix this, you can unbrick (or reopen) the device.
OnePlus has developed their own msm download, or unbricking tool. For now, this is only available for T-Mobile’s OnePlus 7T phones.
The Future of OnePlus
These fixes are definitely welcome, especially for more advanced tech-lovers. If you’re looking to boost your efficiency and explore all the options for your OnePlus 7T, then you should have a lot of fun with these new variations.
But most importantly, if these ROM and Kernel options are even a small sample of what these crowd-sourced developers are capable of, we have some incredible advancements to look forward to for 2020.
