CRW files are Canon Raw CIFF image files, they are uncompressed and unprocessed images taken by some older Canon digital cameras. The CRW file format has since been superseded by the newer CR2 file format used by newer Canon digital cameras. Canon’s CRW file format is similar to other raw image formats from other digital camera manufacturers, such as Nikon’s NEF, Olympus’ ORF, Fuji’s RAF and Sony’s ARW formats.
How can you open CRW files?
CRW files can be opened on any Canon digital cameras that natively shoot using the file format, and may still display on newer models. Most raw image viewers will be able to display CRW files. Most file converters can convert CRW files to other image formats, given the size of RAW images however, local software may be preferable to online converters.
What programs work with CRW files?
Proprietary software that comes included with Canon digital cameras will be able to view and edit CRW image files. Other image viewers and editing software such as Microsoft Photos, IrfanView, XnView, Able RAWer and RawTherapee are all able to load CRW files and are available for free. Adobe Photoshop and CorelDRAW Graphics Suite are also able to work with CRW files but come with a cost. CRW files can be converted to DRW images with the use of Adobe DNG Converter. Other online and downloadable converters such as Zamzar are available that convert to more common image file formats such as PNG.
