Brave for Android: Disable Sponsored Images in the New Tab Page

Brave for Android: Disable Sponsored Images in the New Tab Page

Posted on August 5, 2020 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

A nice feature included in the Brave browser for Android is the inclusion of some interesting photographs in the New Tab page. This lets you see some cool pictures whenever you open a new tab, instead of the more common plain coloured background that other browsers have.

Occasionally, however, this image instead features an advertisement rather than a simple photo with credit to the photographer. Credit where it’s due though – the advertisements here are not particularly intrusive and stick to the same format as the other photos, but you may still not want them there.

Note: As a free browser that doesn’t actively mine your browsing data, Brave has limited ways in which it can make money. While you may not be a massive fan of the adverts, they represent a non-intrusive way for the project to receive funding. This is especially important for users that don’t want to take part in the Brave Rewards scheme, which allows vetted ads to be displayed on webpages, in return for a small amount of cryptocurrency. At some point though, Brave needs funding, and this one of the most user-friendly ways it can get it.

Still, you may not want to see adverts at all. For those of you that want to hide these adverts, you can easily do so through the in-app settings. To open the settings, tap the triple-dot icon in the bottom left, then tap “Settings”.

To open the settings, tap the triple-dot icon in the bottom right, then tap “Settings”.

In the settings, tap on “New tab page” in the “Display” sub-section.

Tap on “New tab page” in the “Display” sub-section to manage the appearance of the new tab page.

To disable the sponsored images on the new tab page, simply tap “Show sponsored images” so the slider is in the off position. Changing this setting will require the app to restart, a process which will not cause any of your tabs to disappear. Follow the prompt to restart Brave immediately.

Move the slider labelled “Show sponsored images” to the “Off” position.
