Password managers enable you to securely store all of your login details for every account you have. By saving them rather than having to remember them you can choose to ensure that every service you use has a unique, long, and complex password. One of the many convenient usability features that password managers such as Bitwarden offer are associating entries in your vault with a URL. The main advantage of this is that, through the use of a URL matching algorithm, your password manager can suggest and even auto-fill the correct login details for the sites you browse to.
If you choose not to enter URLs for each of your entries, however, or if you prefer not to use the browser extension at all. It can be a bit more of a pain to find the set of credentials you want to use, especially if you have dozens of entries in your vault.
Thankfully password managers offer a search function that allows you to search for entries, saving you the effort of scrolling through. Bitwarden’s search functionality requires you to type two characters before it starts returning results. It also returns results that either match the name you’ve assigned to the entry or the username in the entry. This gives you more flexibility in the search terms that you enter. For example, you can search for a pseudonym you use to see all accounts that use that as a username.
How to search your vault in the browser extension
To search through your entries via the browser extension, first, open the extension pane. To do so, click on the Bitwarden extension icon. Next, click into the text box at the top of the extension pane with the placeholder text “Search vault” and type your search term. You don’t have to press enter, as soon as you type a second character your search results will be shown in real-time.
How to search your vault in the web vault
In the default “My vault” tab of the web vault, type your search term in the text box with the placeholder text “Search vault” found at the top of the “Filter” bar on the left. Just as in the browser extension, your results will be returned as soon as you type a second character.
Search functionality allows you to manually search through your vault without having to scroll through every entry. By following the steps in this guide, you can search your vault in both the Bitwarden browser extension and web vault.
