Bitwarden: How To Filter Your Vault

Bitwarden: How To Filter Your Vault

Posted on April 8, 2021 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

Password managers are a really helpful way to securely store all of your passwords. Using a password manager even encourages better security practices. By removing the requirement of remembering your passwords, you can choose unique, long, and complex passwords for each account you have. To help with this, many password managers offer a password generator too.

Many password managers offer a browser extension that enables features such as auto-fill. T his only works, however, if you have configured your entries in your password vault to have URLs associated with them. These associated URLs are the only way for your password to know which credentials are associated with which service. If you never saved URLs in your vault, or if you prefer not to use the browser extension. Then you are likely stuck manually finding the right set of credentials in your vault.

Bitwarden allows you to search (please link to other article) through your vault or to filter results by entry type or folder. You can even both search and filter the results at the same time.

How to filter your vault contents in the browser extension

To view your vault in any capacity, you need to open the Bitwarden extension pane, and then switch to the “My vault” tab. Here, at the top, you can choose to filter the vault by the four entry types or by your custom folders.

Note: Any items not specifically put in a folder will appear in a “No folder” list at the bottom of your folder section.

In the “My vault” tab of the extension pane, click on an entry category, or a folder to filter your vault contents.

Tip: If you want to search through filtered results, make sure to filter the results first. You can only search filtered results; you can’t filter search results.

How to filter your vault contents in the web vault

To filter your vault contents, click on an entry category or folder in the “Filters” bar on the left of the default “My vault” tab. In the web vault view, you can both search and filter or filter and search, it doesn’t matter which way around you do so.

Tip: You can disable all filters by selecting the top filter “All items”.

In the “My vault” tab, use the “Filters” bar on the left to filter results.

Filtering your vault entries can make it easier to find a specific item when you’re searching through you vault manually for an entry. By following the steps in this guide, you can filter your vault entries in both the Bitwarden browser extension and web vault.
