One of the minor features in the Bitwarden web vault is the account icon. It’s only visible in two places in non-organizational accounts. These are the “My Account” settings page and the profile drop-down menu in the top-right corner. Your name from your “My Account” page determines the color and letters of your account icon. While you can change your icon by trying different combinations of your name, you may want another option.
Bitwarden offers one other alternative feature, Gravatars. Gravatar is a service that uses your email address to generate a profile icon which can then be used on any supported platform to distinguish you individually. Earlier in Bitwarden’s development process, Gravatars were enabled by default. However, a privacy-aware user correctly pointed out that this could allow Gravatar to determine that the user had a Bitwarden account, a minor privacy breach.
Bitwarden completely removed the Gravatar feature at the time. Later, however, a Bitwarden update to add support for Gravatars again was released. This time, however, the setting is optional and is disabled by default. This lets users who want to have a Gravatar icon can use one but lets most users completely avoid Gravatar if they want to.
How to Enable a Gravatar Icon
If you want a Gravatar icon for your account, you can do so in the Bitwarden web vault settings. Got to the web vault. Once you’ve signed in, switch to the “Settings” tab, then click on “Options” in the column on the left. In the options, tick the checkbox labeled “Enable Gravatars,” then click “Save” to apply the change. You’ll be able to see the change immediately in the “My Account” settings page but will need to lock your vault and unlock it again for it to change in the profile drop-down menu.
Gravatars are an alternative profile icon type that is based on the email account you use. By following the steps in this guide, you can enable a Gravatar icon for your account.
