When you create an account with any website, you can generally create a username that you like. In many apps, your username must be unique as it can be used to sign in. In Bitwarden, this isn’t the case; you always need to use your email address to sign in. Your name is only used to refer to you when you are signed in. You can see this when you click on the profile dropdown menu in the top-right corner of the web vault.
A small icon is created for you with two initials and background color when you set your name. This color changes for each combination of characters you enter. If you don’t like the color and letter combination you ended up with, you may want to try to get a different result by changing the name you gave.
Tip: The color generator is case insensitive, so it doesn’t matter if you put “Technipages” or “technipages”; you’ll still end up with the same color. As far as initials go, if your name is one letter, your initial will be that letter. If your name is one word, your initials will be the first two letters. If your name is more than one word, the first two words’ first letter will be used as your initials. Hyphenated names are only recognized as being single words.
How to Change Your Name in Bitwarden
To change your name, you need to sign into the Bitwarden web vault. Once you’ve done so, click on the “Settings” in the top bar. You can find the text box to change your name at the top of the default “My account” tab. You can also see the color and initial combination that you end up in the top-right corner. This combination will update live as you type, so try different configurations until you find something you like.
Tip: If you can’t find a combination you like with your actual name, you could try a pseudonym, or you can put trailing spaces after your name until you get a color you like.
Once you’ve found a configuration of your name that results in a nice combination of initials and color, click “Save” to update your account. For the change to take effect, you will have to log out of the web vault and back in. Locking your vault is not enough for this to work.
In Bitwarden, the name on your account is used to create user icons with initials and colors. By following the steps in this guide, you can change the name on your account and your icon.
