You’d be forgiven for thinking that the only things that a password manager stores are passwords as well as the associated username and any extra details. Many feature-rich password managers, such as Bitwarden, allow you to save other information as well. One of the things that you can save in Bitwarden are payment card details. By saving these details in your password manager you can save yourself having to remember them or needing to check them when you want to make a purchase online.
How to add a card with the Bitwarden browser extension
To be able to add an entry to your Bitwarden vault, click on the Bitwarden icon to pen the extension pane, then click the “Add” icon in the top-right corner.
In the “Add item” screen select “Card” from the “Type” dropdown box to see the card details form.
How to add a card from the Bitwarden website
On the Bitwarden website, in the default “My vault” tab, click “Add item” in the top-right, then select “Card” in the “What type of item is this?” dropdown box.
In either view, you should enter all of your card details. Be sure to enter the cardholder’s name, card number, security code, and expiry date. The “Name” should just be an identifier, so you know which card is being used. “Folder” allows you to group vault items together for added structure.
You can also add notes or custom fields to the entry if you want to include extra information.
Tip: You may want to leave a key but easily memorable piece of information missing such as the security code or the expiry date. If you enter all your details, anyone with access to your password manager could use your card, for example, if you left your laptop unlocked. If you leave a bit of information out, then they wouldn’t have enough information to use it.
Once you’ve entered all the information you want to save, click “Save”. In the browser extension, this is in the top-right corner of the extension pane, in the website, this is in the bottom left of the popup.
Saving your payment card details in your password manager can be helpful. It can save you the time and effort of memorising all of your card details, or from having to check every time you want to make a payment. By following the steps in this guide, you can save your payment card details in your Bitwarden vault.
