VPNs are a fantastic tool to provide you privacy from your ISP and security when using unencrypted public Wi-Fi networks. Free VPNs always sound great but often compromise on the service in some way. Most free VPNs from reputable providers either throttle your connection or impose strict and low data caps. The more unscrupulous free VPN providers may do the same but also tend to actively log, analyse, and sell your browsing data.
If you’re wanting to stream live video to or from services like Twitch, and use a free VPN to do so, your choices are very limited because streaming uses a lot of bandwidth. You’re likely much better off choosing a paid service with an unlimited data cap and more resources to dedicate to bypassing anti-VPN filters. In fact, only two VPN providers offer a free data plan that allows for any reasonable amount of streaming.
Windscribe offers up to 15GB of unthrottled data a month to free accounts, that have a confirmed email address and take advantage of its “Tweet-4-Data” promotion. This should be enough for some streaming, but you would likely run out at some point during the month.
Tip: “Unthrottled” means that your speed isn’t artificially restricted by the provider. Your connection speed will still be limited, but only by available resources rather than from deliberate slow-downs.
Windscribe can unblock access to some live streaming sites, such as sports streaming sites, although access from the ten free-tier servers may be inconsistent due to Geo-IP access restrictions. Gaming orientated live streaming sites such as Twitch, are much less likely to be blocked because they don’t host geographically copyrighted content.
The ten free tier servers are mostly located in North America and Europe, with one server located in Hong Kong, as such users in those regions are likely to get the best service. Windscribe doesn’t inject any ads and has a strict no-logs policy.
Windscribe also offers a paid service that can start from as low as $2 a month if you use the “Build a Plan” feature and only select limited options.
Hide.me offers 10GB of free, unthrottled monthly data. This will be enough for a few hours of streaming.
Tip: To stretch your limited data cap further, try to keep the stream quality low, as higher resolutions and qualities will eat through your data quicker. You may want to use the “Split Tunnelling” feature, available on both Windscribe and Hide.me, to only route your streaming traffic through the VPN to save a little extra data.
Hide.me unblocks a number of live streaming sites, including sports sites, although access to some sites may be blocked on the free tier servers. Similar to Windscribe, gaming orientated live streaming sites are such as Twitch are accessible.
Hide.me offers five server locations to its free tier users, with three in North America and two in Europe. A strict no-logs policy is in place and no ads are injected.
Paid plans are also available from Hide.me, starting from $4.99 a month for a two-year plan, covering up to ten devices.
