It seems a common problem for Android users is that it might get stuck in Safe Mode. While in Safe Mode, you might not be able to do much on the device since much of the software required for normal functionality isn’t loaded. Your device might say “No Service” or have problems running apps. App icons may also appear grayed out.
Don’t worry though. We’ve got some things you can try to get your Android out of Safe Mode. The methods to get out of Safe Mode can vary on each device. Here are some ways that generally work with most devices.
1. Power Completely Off
Power completely down by pressing and holding the “Power” button, then select “Power off“. Do NOT select “Restart” or “Reboot”. Many Android devices will stay in Safe Mode if you select “Restart” or “Reboot”.
Once the device is powered off, wait about 2 minutes, then turn the device back on.
2. Check For Stuck Buttons
This is the most common cause for being stuck in Safe Mode. Safe Mode is usually enabled by pressing and holding a button while the device is starting. Common buttons you would hold are the volume up, volume down, or menu buttons. If one of these buttons are stuck or the device is defective and registers a button is being pressed, it will continue to start in Safe Mode.
Ensure none of the buttons are held down by a foreign object or an accessory. Remove the device out of its case to be sure that’s not the cause. Give each button on the device a push to test out if they stick in any way. You may need to clean the buttons with a damp cloth in some cases.
3. Battery Pull (If Possible)
If a simple power down doesn’t do the trick, pull the battery if you own an Android device with a removable battery. Wait about a minute or two before inserting the battery back into the compartment and powering the device back on.
4. Uninstall Recently Installed Apps
If the above options didn’t work, a recently installed app may be causing the device to start in Safe Mode. Open “Settings” > “Apps” and uninstall any recently updated or installed apps, then power the device off and restart.
5. Wipe Cache Partition (Dalvik Cache)
The Android OS stores data in a cache partition. That data can sometimes cause your Android to endlessly be in Safe Mode. Steps for clearing the cache partition can vary with each device. Consult the documentation provided with your device about how to enter Recovery Mode.
6. Factory Reset
If you have tried and tried again to get your phone out of Safe Mode using the steps above, you may want to factory reset your Android. This can be done by going to “Settings” > “Backup & reset”. This will clear all data off of the device and set it back to its factory default state. This is an unfortunate last resort if your problem cannot be solved otherwise.
7. Hardware Issue
If you have tried all of the above attempts to fix your Android, you are most likely looking at a hardware issue with your device. It’s possible the mechanism that controls one of the buttons is broken. It could also be some other internal hardware issue. At this point, your best bet is to contact your carrier or the device manufacturer for a replacement.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!
Power Off. Investigation? Volume down button was stuck on one end. I used a pointy Q-tip (they make them especially to clean up nail polish “oopsies”) to clean the area with alcohol. I was then able to use a very small pointy comedone popper to lever the stuck end back up. Once it was popped up, I used a clean Q-tip to gently cleanse the previously stuck end – had some kind of sticky gunk on it, but it came right off. I powered my phone back up and, Ta-da! No more Safe Mode and everything was restored.
A million thanks! You were the only site that suggested this.

Wow wow!
All Glory be to GOD!
I’m grateful to you for this.
This safe mode appeared on my phone which I need most, this period of my exams at school here. So, I couldn’t access my school group chat to get information about my exams, I couldn’t even read my softcopy materials or access any PDF file.
I restarted the phone, I switched the phone off and on again, I factory reset the phone, and I also did hand flash by pressing the power button and down volume button, but all to no avail.
I just sat down in Church rehearsals thinking of how I will throw this phone in a river if I come across any, until I just decided to make the last search on the internet about anything I can do to solve this problem; and finally, I came across this your blog, and woooooow! You just gave me the solution.
Now knowing that it’s because a button is stuck to the motherboard, I decided to clean the metal pog of the button and the keyboard membrane. After cleaning them, I power off and on the phone, and my phone became totally norma and worked fine…..
Thanks a lot sir.
I’m very grateful…..
Donald Beethe says

What caused it on my phone seems to be that I was holding down the volume button in a vain attempt to avoid making any noise, while I turned on the phone in a quiet office. I was trying to null the “ringtone” jingle that the phone makes when it is turned on and announces it is ready

Hi,
My phone dived in sink. After I have get it dried, have been stuck on ‘safe mode’.
I tried all tips without any success, but…. one of advises was to knock on the edge of the table with the phone volume down button -: D funny thing, but that’s what i did – gently squeezed and twisted the phone what helped !!!. So fortunately it was ( in my case ) the mechanical problem after drying.
good luck.

To anyone having the problems with the samsung A series, what you can try is to power on the phone and hold the volume up button down, you will reach a screen that looks a bit weird but dont be afraid, simply navigate using the volume buttons and select reboot device using the power button, that worked for me since, nothing else worked but that, i even factory data reset my phone.

Countless restarts and the phone was always in Safe mode.
After reading the article, I removed the phone from it’s case, turned it off, restarted it, and it was not in Safe Mode.
I turned it off, Put it back in the case, restarted it, and it was again in Safe mode
Remove the case, restarted and no Safe Mode.
I believe the case is holding down one of the buttons but I can’t tell which one. So I’ll be careful to take it out of the case when I restart the phone
It seems to be OK when I put it back in the case when it is not in Safe Mode.
Thanks for the information posted here!

Shikhar says
Hi, great article but I need your immediate help.
Here’s my problem:
My phone was working fine earlier, then I used the ADB command fastboot reboot recovery and that’s when it displayed the dead Android and the red triangle error symbol.
Since I own LG K10, Model number K430TV, the volume up, down and power button are at the back of this phone. I held down on all three until I saw the LG logo.
Then, I only held the top volume key and power button for a bit longer, perhaps 10 more seconds?
Finally, instead of booting normally, it is now asking me to enter a password to unblock Android.
I have been given 30 attempts to do so. But no matter what I enter, the number of attempts do not decrease below 29, that’s strange!
Also, I have never ever set up any password on this phone before so I am not sure what to enter here.
Is there a way out of this? Do I need to flash a new OS or something? If so, how?
Anthony says
I took an exacto knife and put it under the volume button, afterwards i kept pullin up until it came out and then i restarted the phone and it came out of safe mode.
khan says
Hi,
I followed all steps (factory reset as well) and also took out battery, unscrewed motherboard but same problem.
Paul / Newport says
#2 did the trick. It seems my case wasn’t completely on after I had to charge it via the USB landing pad.
Pat says
Yes indeed your suggestion no 2 was spot on. The volume button must have got stuck. Recently whenever I powered on my android it gave out quite a loud tune and to stop this ear piercing noise I would press hard on the volume down button. Today it must have got stuck. But it now comes on ((.still playing the loud musical notes) but WITHOUT THE SAFE MODE. so thanks to you. I am now back in business and my greyed out icons are now back in glorious colour.. thank you. Maybe you will know how I can be stop the noise it now makes when powered on. This started since updating to android version 6. In fact several weird things have happened since then but I am working on them one at a time.
Thanks again
Mary says
I’m sorry, but none of these got my phone out of safe mode. I am so frustrated!! Ant more suggestions?
