Are you having problems connecting your Android device to your Microsoft Windows 10 computer? Follow these tips to see if you can get it connecting.
1 – Make Sure the Android is Powered on and Set to Connect
Make sure the Android device is powered on and set to connect to the PC. You will usually have to swipe down the notification area on the device and select that you would like to connect as “Media Device (MTP)” or “File Transfer“.
2 – Determine if Hardware is Detected
- Does Windows make a sound at all when you connect the device to your computer? If not, the port or cable may be the problem. Try to plug the cable into a different port on the computer or try a different USB cable from another Android device. I’d say about 90% of the time, problems with PC connectivity can be traced down to problems with the cable or port.
- Sometimes conflicting devices can also cause a problem. Try unplugging any other hardware from any other USB ports , then unplug and re-plug the Android to your computer to see if that allows your computer to detect the Android device.
- Also be sure that there is nothing jamming the USB port on the phone. Sometimes lint or something sticky can get jammed into the port and cause it not to connect properly. You can try cleaning the port out with a light brush or wooden toothpick.
3 – Troubleshoot Windows
If you’ve tried a new cable and port, you now move onto seeing what the problem is within Windows.
- Before you begin anything major, try shutting the computer completely down by selecting “Start” > “Shut Down“, then power the computer back on.
- Download and install any drivers that your Android device may require. You should be able to download the latest driver software from the manufacturer of your device.
- Check for any references to the Android in Device Manager by going to “Control Panel” > “Hardware and Sound” > “Device Manager“. It may be detected as an “MTP or “Unknown Device” under “Other Devices” or “Portable Devices“. Try right-clicking then selecting “Uninstall“. Once the device is removed, try restarting Windows by going to “Start” > “Restart“.
4 – Try Another Computer
If you’ve arrived here and none of the above steps have worked, the problem may be with your Android device. Try to plug it into another computer and see if it is detected there. If not, you will want to seek a repair or replacement from the manufacturer of your Android.
If your device is detected by another computer, keep trying to troubleshoot the problematic computer by removing software that may conflict with the device.
