Android: Enable or Disable Google Feed

Posted on October 8, 2017 by Mitch Bartlett 15 Comments

The Google Feed (formerly known as Google Now) feature on the Android devices is considered great by some users, and annoying by others. Some people live by their Google Feed cards, while others find them annoying and intrusive. Here’s how to turn the feature on or off.

  1. From the Home screen, tap “Apps“.
  2. Choose “Google“.
  3. Tap the “Menu” button in the upper-left corner.
  4. Select “Settings“.
  5. Choose “Your feed“.
  6. Set the settings on the screen as deisred:
    • The “Notifications” setting controls whether or not updates display in the notification area. Set it to “On” or “Off” as desired. You can also set a Ringtone or Vibrate option on urgent updates.
    • The “Feed” setting turns the entire Google Now feature on and off. When selected, you can also choose to delete your Google Feed preferences and disable Google Feed on all the devices tied to your account.

r below is right! It’s very easy to turn off. Like he said, long press on a home screen to pull up the launcher to change your wallpaper and add widgets. On the bottom right is a button for “Home Settings”. There you can turn off “Display Google App”.

BAM! Your fully customized annoying feed of clickbait is gone!!

‘Signing out’ from the Google app turns off the feed page. You just have to find out where… It’s not obvious.

    Settings > Accounts and privacy
    Touch ‘Google account’

    This launches the sign-out pop-up

    Select ‘Sign out’

Google please, this Feed screen on the far left that doesn’t want to seem to go away (even when I toggle off “Your Feed”) is just an unbelivable daft “feature”.
No good has come to any company by forcing things down customer’s throats. Maybe in short term, but I am now considering alternate launchers or a different phone for my next upgrade.

Give us a simple option to get rid of that forced far left Feed screen.

I went to (phone) settings, then applications, then application manager, then google icon, then unclicked box next to “notifications” (as well as clered cache and cleared storage under ‘manage storage’) on a samsung android. This is an annoying unwanted feature they automatically added without knowledge.

I posted below regarding deleting updates for the Google App to bring back the switch to disable the feed. Alas, about 24 hours after allowing the Google App to update, it seems to have re-enabled itself.

I had this issue on my Nexus 5X. I didn’t have the option to disable the Feed even though I had seen the switch previously. I think a more recent Google App update disabled the switch. I was able to get rid of the feed by: removing all app updates for the Google App (this set me back to v6.something). Now I can see the switch and disable the feed. I hesitated with updating the Google App for two months, but finally allowed it to update. Luckily, the feed is still disabled for me, so this may work for others.

Also, is this just a “feature” of the Google Now Launcher? If so, perhaps just switching to an alternate launcher could work for some people.

The option to disable google now cards feed has been removed (!) so what worked was signing out of the Google app. Here’s how:

    Open Google app
    Tap sandwich bar then Settings
    Tap Accounts and Privacy
At the top, tap your Google account which is probably listed and then sign out

On my android, next to the disable feed option, there is an actual note that says you can’t disable the feed on newer versions of the google search app. I just got rid of the app as best I could (disable). The feed is really annoying.

    This will stop it:
    Tap on google bar
Press the Google icon until three lines show up
    Tap the three lines
    Tap settings
    Tap autocomplete
    Turn off
    Feed disappears

Is it a widget? Can you tap and hold it to move it to trash?

I still got a Feed page on the left of my home screen. How do I disable this completely? Buying an iPhone?
