The Google Play store is overrun with countless podcast apps. Still, not all of them were created equally, and some are definitely better than others. Below is a list of our favourites, and why we think they are the best!
Pocket Casts
Pocket Casts isn’t free, unless the other entries on this list, but it has just about everything a podcast fan could want. There are a lot of advanced playback controls, playback speed controls, a volume booster and even the ability to cut out moments of silence in an episode – a feature that we only learned to appreciate when we actually started using it.
Add in the nice dark theme, playback stats that let you know just how much you’ve listened to, and auto-download, and you’ve got a recipe for success.
Podcast Addict – Top Pick!
One of the most popular Android app in the Play Store, Podcast Addict is perfect for listening to the radio, to audiobooks, live streams, YouTube, Twitch and similar services. You can look for new podcasts by category, network, by recommendation based on view history and more. This app has similar options to Pocket Casts, with skip silence options, mono playback, volume boost, and adjustable playback speed.
Google Podcasts
It took a long time for Google to release their own version of a podcast app, but the ultimate end product was well worth the wait. It’s entirely free to use and for heavy Google users, it’s probably the best option. It’s compatible with any Google Assistant powered speaker – any podcast you start on the app you can continue on the speaker.
Finding new podcasts is as easy as, well, Googling it. The app also has a sleek and simple design, nice UI, and some great options that can help you find new interesting podcasts.
Spotify
Spotify is the ultimate choice for casual listeners, and if you already use it for your music needs, you can skip the extra app and just use Spotify for both purposes. It doesn’t have as many features as some of the others on the list, but for casual listeners, Spotify may well be a great choice. Being able to easily switch between your music and podcasts is convenient, and there’s a good chance you’ll already be familiar with the controls of the app!
