AMR files are a type of compressed audio file. They were developed by Ericsson and are commonly found in phones, where these files are used to store spoken audio such as voice recordings and similar content. They can also store MMS messages.
The algorithm used to compress the audio in these files is specifically geared towards human speech – because of this, the format is particularly suited to this task. There are two types of this file – the wideband and narrowband options. The wideband option provides better sound quality (at the cost of larger file sizes) as it’s able to support a broader frequency of audio.
How can you open AMR files?
AMR files can be opened with a wide variety of audio players. They can also be used and opened by most mobile devices built by Ericsson – which means mostly Sony Ericsson phones. Proprietary audio software will also be able to open these files.
What programs work with AMR files?
A wide variety of sound playing programs can play AMR files – among them software like VLC media player, Audacity, Apple Quick Time player and more. Additionally, some file viewing software such as File Viewer Plus will be able to play these files.
