Windows: Error “Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. The component store has been corrupted.”

I was helping somebody with the installation of their new Windows Phone 7 device and we couldn’t get the phone to install to their Windows Vista computer. An error appeared every time we tried.

Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.  The component store has been corrupted.

The fix for was to install the Microsoft System Readiness Tool and run it. This tool works on Windows 7, Vista and 2008 and will usually repair the broken parts of the registry that this error message references.

After trying for four hours to install a device that had successfully installed many times before in Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, I came across your solution involving the Readiness Tool. After downloading the latest version of the tool (May 2012) my device installed correctly. Thank you! The real question is what did Microsoft do to Windows 7 that prevented devices from being installed that had worked for two or more years previously??
