View Invisible Files in Mac OS X

How to view hidden files within Macintosh OS X.

OS X 10.3.x

1. With the Finder active, click File–>Find... .

2. Select “Search for items whose:”, click the Name pull-down menu and select Visibility. The options in the next pull-down menu to the right will change accordingly; select either invisible items or visible and invisible items.

To add additional search criteria, such as a filename, file size, or creation date, click the + (plus sign) on the right side. Each time you click it, you will add another row to the search criteria.

3. After setting all the search criteria, click Search. The search results will appear in a separate window.

OS X 10.2.x

1. With the Finder active, click File–>Find... .

2. In the lower left corner of the Find window that opens, click the Add criteria… pull-down menu, and select visibility.

3. Under “Search for items whose:”, “visibility” should appear as an option. From the pull-down menu next to it, select either off (to search for invisible files only) or all (to search for both visible and invisible files).

4. Select any other search criteria you wish and fill in the fields as appropriate, and then click Search. The search results will appear in a separate window.

OS X 10.1.x and earlier

1. From the Applications folder, open Sherlock.

2. In the Sherlock window, in the Custom pop-up menu, select Edit… .

3. In the More Search Options window, click the arrow next to “Advanced Options”. This will reveal additional search parameters.

4. Click the checkbox next to “is”, then select invisible from the menu.

5. To return to Sherlock, click the OK button, and then search to locate invisible files on your computer.
