Turn Off 4G/LTE On the Droid Charge

I currently live in a town where Verizon doesn’t provide 4G/LTE service. That’s why I won’t be purchasing a Samsung Droid Charge. If you do purchase one and also can’t grab an LTE signal, you may want to turn off the LTE connection on the device and allow it to connect via 3G instead. Why do that? Well, it will save you a bit of battery power. Smartphones are always constantly searching for the best possible signal it can obtain. All that searching consumes battery power and turning 4G off will prevent the Droid Charge from doing this. You can’t disable it using regular Android menus though. You’ll have to access the testing screen.

1. Tap the application slider and select the Phone app.

2. Dial *#*#4636#*#*

3. The testing screen will appear. Select the Phone information menu.

4. Scroll down to the Set preferred network type menu and set it to CDMA auto (PRL).

5. Tap the Home button and you’re done.

The setting will go into effect immediately and the Droid Charge will stop searching for an LTE signal.

If you find one day that your town has LTE service or if you travel to a major city that does, you can perform steps 1 to 3 again and set the setting back to CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto.
