At times you may get the following error when trying to sync your Microsoft Zune device:

Zune Device is not Responding

Error Summary:

Your Zune Device has not responded to the last command from your computer. It may be hung. Disconnect your device from your computer and then reconnect it to reestablish normal communications.

To try to solve this problem, you may need to restart the device. To do so, perform the following steps:

1. Detach the Zune from the cable connected to your computer.

2. Press and hold the Back button while pressing the top of the Zune pad.

3. When the device restarts, let go of the buttons.

4. Try to sync again.

Zune: Erase All Data

How to erase all data off of your Zune and start new. This can be a good option to try if you are experiencing problems with files on your Zune or it regularly becomes unresponsive.

1. Select Settings.

2. Select Device.

3. Select Sync Options.

4. Select Erase All Content.

5. Select Yes and confirm that you want to delete all content from the device.

All of your files will then be removed from the Zune.

Zune: Enable Wireless

How to enable the wireless feature on your Zune device.

1. On the Home screen select Settings.

2. Select Wireless.

3. Change the Wireless setting to On.

4. Press and hold the Back button to return to the Home screen.

Here are a few settings you can play with to conserve the battery power on your Zune.

Turn off wireless: Select Settings > wireless, and select wireless:off.

Lower the backlight time: Select Settings > display, and select backlight:1 or 5 seconds.

Lower the backlight brightness: Select Settings > display, and select brightness: low

Use the Hold setting: Set it to Locked when you are not using the device. This will prevent the device from playing accidentally.

Keep the device in a cool environment: Lithium-ion batteries like the one in the Zune like cooler environments. Keeping the device in a cooler environment will make the battery last a bit longer.

Use these tips and keep your Zune providing you with hours and hours of play time. Listed below are the average times a Zune device lasts per full battery charge.

Zune 4GB: 24 hours
Zune 8GB: 24 hours
Zune 30GB: 14 hours
Zune 80GB: 30 hours

When you try to sync your Zune, a problem may occur where you get the following error:

Can’t use your Zune Pass with this Zune because you have three other Zune devices already using it. To update the devices for this account, click your Zune tag and select Computers and devices.

You can only sync with a total of 3 devices. One of the devices must be removed. To do so, try the following steps:

1. In the Zune software, Click Sign In, and then enter your credentials.

2. Click Settings > Computers and Devices.

3. Click Remove for the device you want to remove. Click OK when you’re done.

You should now be able to associate a new device with your Zune Pass as well as sync it.

Disable Zune Marketplace

Disable the Zune Marketplace and avoid waiting through the message:

1. Double-click My Computer and browse to C:Program FilesZune (or find the location the Zune software is installed).

2. Right click zunemarketplace.dll and select Rename.

3. Now you can type a new name for this file. Rename it to zunemarketplace.old.

Now the next time you launch your Zune software, the Zune Marketplace will be disabled. To re-enable it, you can simply go back and rename the file back to zunemarketplace.dll.

How to update the firmware of your Zune device.

Open the Zune software and follow these steps:

1. Click Options–>Sync–>devicename and then click Check for Zune Device Updates.

The Zune software searches the Internet for the latest version of the firmware. If a newer version of the Zune firmware is available, you receive the Update time dialog box. If this is the case, click Next.
Important Do not move or disconnect your Zune device until the update is completed.

2. As the update continues, you receive the Update in progress dialog box.

Note The update may take several minutes to be completed. During this time, your Zune device may restart several times. Be patient.

3. After the update is completed, you receive the Zune update complete dialog box. Depending how your Zune device is configured, click Next to complete the update process and continue to the next step, or click Close to complete the update process.

If you already have the latest version of the Zune firmware installed, you receive the Update your Zune dialog box and a notice that the firmware is up to date. Click Close.

1. On the Home screen on the Zune device, select Settings, and then press the OK button in the center of the Control Pad.

2. Select About, and then press the OK button.

3. Select Zune, and then press the OK button.

How to block or unblock another Zune device from sending you pictures and music.

To block a device, follow these steps:

1. On the Home screen, select Community, and then press OK.

2. Select Nearby, and then press OK.

3. Select the device that you want to block, and then press OK.

4. Press OK again to block the device.

5. Press and hold the Back button to return to the Home screen.

To unblock a device, follow these steps:

1. On the Home screen, select Community, and then press OK.

2. Select Nearby, and then press OK.

3. Select Show Blocked, and then press OK.

4. Select the device that you want to unblock, and then press OK.

5. Press OK again to unblock the device.

6. Press and hold the Back button to return to the Home screen.

How to Turn Off Zune Device

How to turn off your Zune device.

Hold down the Back button and Down button.

The device will then shut off.

You get an error: “The software you are installing for this hardware: Zune has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP” when trying to install your Zune.

1. Right-click My Computer.

2. Click Properties, and then click Device Manager.

3. Locate Zune under Portable Devices.

4. Right-click Zune, and then click Properties.

5. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

6. Click Install the software automatically (Recommended), and then click Next.

7. After the driver installation is completed, click Finish.

Zune: Change the Background

How to change your background on your Zune device.

1. Select PICTURES.

2. Select the picture you wish to be your Zune background. You can do this by either playing the slideshow and waiting for the picture, viewing by folder or viewing by date.

3. Once the picture appears, click the center of the control pad.

How to Reset Zune

How to reset your Zune device if it is not responding.

Press back and up at the same time. This should reset the device. You may also need to plug it into a power source. Also make sure the hold switch on the top of your Zune device is set to “off” while you are performing these steps.

Change the name that is displayed for your Zune Device.

1. Start Zune Software, and then connect your Zune device to a computer by using the Zune Sync cable.

2. After your Zune device connects to Zune Software, click Options–>Sync, Advanced Options.

3. In the Device name text box, type the new device name. Click OK.

4. Your Zune device name is now changed in the software.

5. After you disconnect your Zune device, the new device name will appear in the Community twist on a Zune device.
