How to reset or zap the PRAM in Mac OS X: Leopard.

1. Restart your computer while holding down the keys Command+Option+P+R.

2. Wait for your computer to chime twice before releasing the keys.

The screen will flash when the PRAM resets.

Mac OS X Leopard users have been looking for a way to make the Leopard sidebar icons larger. We’ve seen quite a few emails asking us if there is a way. However, there is no current way to make the Sidebar icons bigger. We urge you to let your Leopard desires be known to Apple.

If you want to prevent changes to a Word 2008 document, you can password protect it from being changed.

1. Click File > Save As.

2. Click Options.

3. Click the Show All button

4. Click the Security button.

5. Type a password in the Password to Modify box.

6. Click OK.

7. Type the password again.

8. Click OK.

Leopard: Enable/Disable Firewall

How to enable or disable the built in Mac OS X: Leopard firewall.

1. Open System Preferences.

2. Open Security under the Personal section.

3. Click the Firewall button.

4. Do one of the following:

  • Select Block all incoming connections to enable the firewall to block all incoming connections. Certain programs may not function with this setting though.
  • Select Limit incoming connections to specific services and applications, then click the arrow next to Services to expand the list of services and then use the menu to the right of each service to allow ir disallow connections. You can do the same with Applications.
  • Select Allow all incoming connections to disable the firewall.

5. Close System Preferences when you’re finished.

In Mac OS X: Leopard, the System Profiler can be used to find technical specs on your mac such as the processor type and speed, type of cache, and the file system. For you Windows users, it’s basically the same as the System Information application. There are many ways to open the System Profiler:

  • Launch it from the /Applications/Utilites folder.
  • Hold down the Option key while choosing Apple > About This Mac, and the menu item will change to System Profiler.
  • Choose Apple > About This Mac and click More Info…

You have a problem opening the Keyboard & Mouse Preferences. It just stays at Loading Keyboard & Mouse.

To fix this problem, try the following:

1. Navigate to User/Library/Preferences.

2. Delete the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file.

Now you should be able to access the Keyboard & Mouse Preferences. This will also fix any problems you may experience with function keys on your keyboard such as F1 through F12 not working.

How to allow Windows computers to connect to your shared files in Mac OS X Leopard.

1. Open System Preferences.

2. Open Sharing under Internet & Networking.

3. Provide a name in the Computer Name field. This will be the name that other computers see on the network.

4. Check the box for File Sharing.

5. Click Options…

6. Check the box for Share Files and Folders using SMB.

7. Check the accounts that you wish to allow access to your computer over the network.

8. Click Done and close System Preferences.

Now Windows Computers will be able to access the files you are sharing on your Mac.

When you attempt to open Microsoft Office 2008, you get an error that says:

Microsoft Office 2008 is already in use

This error means that somebody else on the network is running Microsoft Office 2008 with the same product ID. Each copy of Office 2008 that is running on a network must have a different product ID. To resolve this issue, you must remove the licensing information from at least one of the computers and replace it with new information.

1. Disconnect the computer from the network.

2. Open the hard disk where Mac OS X is installed, and then open Applications.

3. Open Microsoft Office 2008, double-click Additional Tools, and then double-click Remove Office.

4. Double-click Remove Office, press and hold down the Option key, click Remove Licensing Information Only, and then click Remove.

Note: The Continue command label changes to Remove Licensing Information Only when you press the Option key.

5. Close the Remove Office window, and then click Quit.

6. Start Office 2008. When prompted, enter the correct licensing information.

Leopard: Set IP Address Manually

How to set the IP address manualy in Mac OS X Leopard.

1. Open System Preferences.

2. Open Network under the Internet & Network section.

3. Select Ethernet on the left pane.

4. Select Manually in the Configure drop-down menu.

5. Enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS, and Search Domains information.

6. Click Apply, and you’re done.

Unfortunately, the iPhone doesn’t sync bookmarks directly from Firefox. There is a workaround though. To import Bookmarks from Firefox, you first will have to import them into Safari, then sync them into your iPhone.

Mac users can perform the following steps:

1. Open Safari and select File > Import Bookmarks…

2. Find your bookmark file under your Home folder, then Library > Application Support > Firefox > Profiles > user folder.

3. Double-click the file called bookmarks.html.

4. Connect your iPhone and select it on the left pane in iTunes.

5. Click on the Info button.

6. In the Web Browser section, turn on Sync Safari bookmarks and click Apply.

Windows users can perform these steps:

1. Open Firefox and select Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks.

2. Bookmarks Manager will open. Select File > Export…

3. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop.

4. Open Safari and select File > Import Bookmarks…

5. Double-click the bookmarks.html file on your desktop.

6. Connect your iPhone and select it on the left pane in iTunes.

7. Click on the Info button.

8. In the Web Browser section change the option for Sync bookmarks from to Safari.

Prevent iPhoto from detecting and importing photos from your iPhone when you connect it to your Mac.

You can accomplish this by changing this setting:

1. Open the Image Capture application from the Applications folder.

2. Select Image Capture > Preferences.

3. For the option When a camera is connected select No application. Click OK.

Now you shouldn’t be bothered with any prompts to import photos from your iPhone.

Leopard: Enable and Use Zoom

1. Open System Preferences.

2. Open Universal Access under the System area.

3. Click the On radio button in the Zoom section.

Alternately, you can turn Zoom on by holding Clover Key and Option while pressing 8.

Leopard: Change Computer Name

How to change the computer name of your Mac in OS X Leopard.

1. Open System Preferences.

2. Open Sharing under Internet & Network.

3. Enter a new name in the Computer Name field.

Leopard: Enable AppleTalk

How to add your Mac to an AppleTalk network.

1. Open System Preferences from the Finder menu.

2. Select Ethernet on the left side.

3. Click Advanced.

4. Click the AppleTalk tab.

5. Select Make AppleTalk Active.

6. Select your AppleTalk Zone.

7. Click Apply.

How to enable or disable the pop-up blocker in Safari for Mac.

1. Click Safari > Preferences.

2. Click on Security at the top of the window.

3. Check the box Block pop-up windows to enable this feature. Uncheck it to disable it.
