Disable the screen in Internet Explorer where add-ons can be enabled or disabled.

1. Open REGEDIT

2. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER (or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE for all computer users)
then SOFTWARE
then Policies
then Microsoft
then Internet Explorer
then Restrictions

3. Right-click Restrictions and create a new REG_DWORD named NoExtensionManagement Set it’s value to 1 to disable the ability to modify whether Add-ons are enabled or disabled.

When you try to use Internet Explorer under Windows XP you get the error:

The page cannot be displayed. Additionally, you may have no IP address or no Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address, and you may be receiving IP packets but not sending them.

Fixing Winsock 2 may fix this problem.

1. Click on START>RUN

2. Type the following command:

netsh winsock reset catalog

This should reset Winsock 2 registry entries. See if you have the same problem.

Disable the yellow security bar in Internet Explorer from appearing when you try to download files or use ActiveX controls.

1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools.

2. Click Internet Options.

3. Under the Security tab, click Custom Level.

4. To turn off the yellow bar for downloads, scroll to the Downloads section. Then set Automatic prompting for file downloads to Enable.

To turn off the yellow bar for ActiveX controls, scroll to the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section. Then set Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls to Enable.

Use the Kiosk Mode feature with Internet Explorer.

Kiosk Mode is usually used for PC’s on display where you want to enable users to use a certain web site and not be able to click on anything else. The toolbars, taskbar, and navigation buttons are all missing from the Internet Explorer screen when in Kiosk Mode.

You can use Kiosk Mode by using the -k switch when launching Internet Explorer along with the location of the web page you would like to display. Here are 2 examples:

iexplore -k http://www.technipages.com
iexplore -k “c:my documentswebpage.htm”

To quit Kiosk Mode, you must quit Internet Explorer by holding down ALT and pressing F4.

IE7 installation freezes at a certain point and never finishes.

This is usually caused by the updates that are being installed while IE7 is being installed.

To fix this problem:

1. Go through the installation wizard normally until you get to the Get the latest updates part of the installer.

2. Clear the check to Install the latest updates for Internet Explorer and the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (recommended) check box, and then click Next.

The installation should then proceed normally.

Create shortcuts to clear your Internet Explorer (IE7) Browsing History Tracks.

You can use the following RUNDLL32 commands to clear your tracks in IE7. You can also make shortcuts for each of these functions.

Delete Temporary Internet Files:
RunDll32.exe InetCpl.cpl,ClearMyTracksByProcess 8

Delete Cookies:
RunDll32.exe InetCpl.cpl,ClearMyTracksByProcess 2

Delete History:
RunDll32.exe InetCpl.cpl,ClearMyTracksByProcess 1

Delete Form Data:
RunDll32.exe InetCpl.cpl,ClearMyTracksByProcess 16

Delete Passwords:
RunDll32.exe InetCpl.cpl,ClearMyTracksByProcess 32

Delete All:
RunDll32.exe InetCpl.cpl,ClearMyTracksByProcess 255

Delete All + files and settings stored by Add-ons:
RunDll32.exe InetCpl.cpl,ClearMyTracksByProcess 4351

IE7 includes a feature that turns the address bar green when a secure site presents an Extended Validation Certificate.

1. Ensure that you either have the Phishing Filter set to Automatic mode or Tools–>Internet Options–> Advanced–>Security–>Check for Server Certificate revocation checked.

2. If that doesn’t work, install the Windows Root Certificate Update and restart.

You cannot start Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) because it flashes the screen when you try and then disappears. This usually happens after installation.

1. Click START–>RUN and type cmd

2. At the prompt, type cd and press ENTER

3. Type cd Program Files and press ENTER

4. Type cd Internet Explorer and press ENTER

5. Type regsvr32 IEPROXY.DLL

6. You should get a confirmation that the IEPROXY.DLL has been registered. You can then close all windows and try Internet Explorer again.

If these steps don’t solve the problem, try these steps.

Speed up Internet Explorer with this registry hack. It will increase the maximum connections per server.

1. Click START–>RUN and type REGEDIT. Click OK.

2. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
then SOFTWARE
then Microsoft
then Windows
then CurrentVersion
then Internet Settings

Double click on the value MaxConnectionsPerServer and change it to a value of 10
Do the same thing for the value MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server. Give it a value of 10 as well.

Internet Explorer will now be faster because it can have up to 16 open connections per server.

Internet Explorer 7 crashes whenever you start it up. The screen might flash briefly and then disappear or crash with an error message.

This problem is usually caused by a plugin that is not compatible with Internet Explorer 7.

Try starting Internet Explorer after clearing the plug-ins

Control Panel–>Internet Options–>Programs–>Manage Add-Ons

Set the Add-ons here to DISABLED.

You can also try launching Internet Explorer with Add-Ons disabled.

While adding a Favorite to Internet Explorer 7, it freezes or locks up and will not respond.

The likely cause of this is that a favorite has been added that has more than 221 characters. Since you cannot access the Favorites once a favorite with more than 221 characters has been created, you will need to make a change in the following location.

1. Go to MY COMPUTER and open the C: drive.

2. Open DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS.

3. Open the folder with your username.

4. Open FAVORITES.

5. Right-click the favorite item with more than 221 characters and shorten it to under 221 characters.

Launch Internet Explorer 7 in a mode where the add-ons are disabled.

1. Click START–>RUN

2. Type iexplore -extoff

You can also create a shortcut so that you can always run Internet Explorer this way.

1. Right-click on the Desktop

2. New–>Shortcut

3. Enter in iexplore -extoff

Remove the branding that some ISP’s like AOL add to the title bar in Internet Explorer.

1. Close out of Internet Explorer.

2. Click START–>RUN

3. Type RUNDLL32.EXE IEdkcs32.dll,Clear

This should clear out the branding the next time you run Internet Explorer

Enable or disable the tabs in Internet Explorer 7.

1. In IE7 click Tools, and select Internet Options.

2. Select the General tab.

3. In the Tabs section, click Settings.

4. Uncheck Enable Tabbed Browsing to disable the tabs. Check it to enable tabs.
