The concept of doing away with your cell phone can be considered strange these days. Everybody has a cell phone and just can’t seem to live without them. Right now I am getting charged $80 a month by Verizon. This is for their Basic plan at $39.99 a month. That $39.99 fee doubles by the end of the month with all the surcharges, taxes, etc. I’m beginning to think that it’s not worth it to have a cell phone. Can’t I just use my Vonage account when I’m at home? The rest of the time I can use my phone at work. When I’m out, pay phones still exist at many gas stations.
Some may say I need a cell phone for emergencies. Well, if I need to dial 911, I don’t need a service. Any cell phone can dial 911. For emergencies not requiring 911, I could purchase a pay as you go plan. I would only use the phone when I absolutely need it, and I would never give the number to anybody. My friends have expressed that they would never be able to get in touch with me if I didn’t have a cell phone. This is true. It wouldn’t be as easy. But is the convenience for my friends being able to get in touch with me worth the extra $50 I pay over my Vonage service? I’m skeptical.
You purchase your fancy new cell phone. The battery lasts forever, but after a couple of months the battery doesn’t last as long. Still the capacity it has gets you by. After a year though, the thing hardly holds a charge. What was it that you did that causes this?
Many people think that they haven’t properly cared for their battery, and that’s the reason it will no longer hold a charge. They think that if they had properly discharged their batteries before recharging them, it would’ve made a difference. While this is true for the old Ni-Cad batteries we used to use, this is not true for the lithium-ion batteries that are used in the cell phones we use today.

The iPhone allows you to create a conference call with the ability to talk with up to five different callers.
To make a conference call, perform the following steps:
1. Make your first call.
2. Tap Add Call and call another line. The first call is put on hold while you are doing this. If you want, you can talk on the second line privately before merging the calls.
3. Tap Merge Calls to bring the current line into the conference with the other caller(s).
Perform steps 2 and 3 to add more calls to the conference.
If you have an incoming call that you would like to merge into the conference, tap Hold Call + Answer, then tap Merge Calls.

I bought all the useless Verizon VCAST software thinking I could easily make my MP3’s into ringtones. This was not the case. For ringtones, I would be forced to buy from the VCAST store. I found a way around this though and started making my own ringtones for my LG VX8300 phone. I am told this hack or workaround will work with most LG or Motorola phones on Verizon’s network.
First you have to find the music file you wish to use. I use the Google MP3 Hack to find MP3’s. There are also other ways of getting MP3’s. Oh, and to cover my ass, please know that there are copyright laws, so be sure not to use any songs that are illegally ripped, so be sure only to use legal MP3 files. Uh hu! So, moving on… I have my MP3 file, I just need software to make it so it will fit in my phone. I use Audacity 1.3 for Windows in this example. It’s totally free and a painless applications to use. Download and install Audacity here. After you’re done with that, download the lame_enc.dll file. Save and extract the lame_enc.dll file to your Desktop because Audacity will need it later.
1. Open your MP3 file using Audacity (File > Open). Ringtones typically need to be 30 seconds or less, so we need to trim your MP3 down to the right size. Highlight a 30 second or less chunk of the song. I always like to use the first 30 seconds of the song, but you can use any 30 second chunk of it.
The phone that a well respected consumer rating magazine rated as a good buy turns out to be much less. I went everywhere for the E815 phone since it was rated so well and had the features I liked. I couldn’t get it though.
It turns out that there is a major problem with the charging port on the bottom of the phone. Customers regularly complained that it would break and they could not charge their phones any longer. In response, many Alltel and Verizon stores stopped carrying the phone. Many of the salesmen laughed when I asked for that phone. I guess I’ll have to settle for my LG VX8300. Rated good by that magazine I mentioned as well as Cnet.

Is your current cell phone contract up, or are you looking to renew? Are you looking for the best deal? Here are a few things you should consider before resigning right away just to get that great new piece of crap phone!
Are they trying to get you to sign a 2 year contract? Make sure you read the fine print! For example ? Can you change your rate plan without extending your contract for another 2 years? Most companies will not tell you that you are extending your contract. This is important if you are not sure how many minutes you will be using, or if you need to travel a few months out of the year and switch to that more expensive national plan. Another question is ?Will I roam?? and if so, ?What will I be charged??
If you can afford the phone at the 1-year or no contract price, DO IT! Because I can assure you that 99% of the time your phone will not last you 2 years.
You can purchase phone insurance, which in my opinion seems to be a pretty good deal. If you are accident-prone then $5 to $10 per month will allow you to get the same phone for $50 -$100 if you break or lose your phone. The only catch is you can only file 2 claims a year, and if you lose it or its stolen you must file a police report.(read the fine print)
The phone you are most interested in, will only be pushed upon you if it is the biggest ?money maker?. Cell companies get paid per activation; they don?t make their money off of selling phones. SO what that means is on a NEW 2 year activation they will try to get you into that free or cheap phone, because that means more money for the company and probably a bigger ?spiff? for the sales rep. Don?t fall for it, the best phones I have found are generally the middle price range from $60-$100. Another rip off is buying a $300 phone with a $100 mail-in-rebate. How often do you get a mail-in-rebate back? You usually get a letter from the company stating you didn?t give them everything needed, so in other words, you got screwed! The bottom line is, if you get a free or cheap phone, don?t expect much.
