How to soft reset and hard reset your iPod Touch if it’s frozen or not responding.

Try a soft reset first:

1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of the unit until a red slider appears

2. Drag the slider.

3. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

If a soft reset doesn’t work, try a hard reset:

Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for about ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

If your ipod is disabled because you forgot your password. Connect it to your computer make sure you have itunes installed do the reset by holding awake and sleep button with home button at the same time once it resets hold only the home button down until it connects to your itunes and asks you to restore the ipod

    ZOMG!!
tomtom you saved my freakin’ life!!

before, everytime i tried to start my ipod it would say ipod disabled, connect to itunes, so i went to itunes and it wold say my ipod has its passcode on, go back to ipod and type in passcode or sumthing like that, so it was just telling me to go back and forth and i was like FTW!!, so i tried everything from dowloading the newer itunes and deleted it and restarting my laptop 54692746976529 freakin’ times :@, so i finally gave up for ten minutes and was so pissy i went outside and starting chopping trees, and im all against that so you could imagine i was pretty pissed, so i finally searched google and w.e and found this and read through comments and tomtom IFLY!!

if my ipod touch is locked how can i unlock it if i for got my password

  42. by Danny, on December 5 2008 @ 10:17 pm

LISTEN EVERYONE WHO”S ITOUCH IS DISABLED AND CAN’T REMEMBER THE PASSWORD. I swear to you this works no joke no scam nothing jus itrally works. OK plug in your itouch on the computer, then hold the hold button and the home until you turn it off. after it’s off, hold the hold botton and the home button until the logo appears, once the logo appears then only press the home. I swear this works. Unfortunately it erases everything. I know this works because I work at Apple TM.

Thanks a bunch, to those who put up how to reset the iPod touch when disabled… Really came in handy… just sucks you lose all your info… ;p

  45. by Chris, on December 16 2008 @ 1:52 pm

RESET PASSWORD WITHOUT DELETING FILES. When you connect to your computer when your ipod is disabled, instead of clicking restore, right-click on your ipod in the menu bar and select restore from backup. This only works if you are using the computer you normally use to sync because it will have the backup on it. Hope this helps.

If your ipod is disabled because you forgot your password. Connect it to your computer make sure you have itunes installed do the reset by holding awake and sleep button with home button at the same time once it resets hold only the home button down until it connects to your itunes and asks you to restore the ipod

I RECENTLY CAME BACK FROM DUTY TOUR IN IRAQ MY LAPTOP WAS STOLEN AND HAD MY PASSWORD FOR MY I TOUCH IN IT. HOW DO I GO ABOUT RESSITING MY I POD ON ANOTHER COMPUTER WILL I LOOSE ALL MY INFORMATION ,SONGS PICTURES. EXC.

  53. by Judeii, on December 31 2008 @ 6:19 am

Lol. All you need to do is:
    1. Have Itunes 8 open.
    2. Plug your iPod Touch in
3.Hold the Power/sleep button on the top && the button with a square on it belkow the screen
    4. Continue to hold until iTunes picks up your ipod
    5. It will give you the option to restore
6.**If you Do not have internet connection this will not work because it requires an update from the iTunes Store.
7.Install & your ready to go.

**Unfortunately you lose all your data.
**I suppose this happened because my little brother kept trying to break my passcode.

***IF YOU ARE DOING THIS FROM THE COMPUTER YOU NORMALLY SYNC TO TRY RIGHT CLICKING ON YOUR IPOD IN THE LEFT COLUMN ON ITUNES AND SEE IF IT GIVES YOU THE OPTION TO RESTORE FROM BACKUP. If it doesn’t then well..you’re in my situation..i reformatted my computer recently and lost everything. so i have to start over.

    Best of luck

good lord its like you people dont know how to read – the reset sequence is right there 2 – 3 times repeated and if u have a code that u dont know u have no option the device has to be reset to blank – period – learn to make backups of your music collection next time … geebus

  81. by le, on February 18 2009 @ 1:19 pm

additionally if your device is acting screwed up like buttons not working etc – safe bet is just reset it – windows and mac both come with adequate back up programs – spend the time to back up your data
back ups are your best insurance – period

if pass code block do this
    conect to itunes
press sleep and home at the same time
hold till it shuts off, but do not let go of the buttons.
the ipod should turn back on while the buttons r still held
when this happens, only let go of the sleep button on the top
keep the home held in till the ipod shows the itunes lodo plus usb cord.
this is as far as i have gotten right now. im downlaoding the update fior it to see if it reaaly work.

tomtom place this and it worked!!

I GOTTA THANK DA GUY(S) DAT PROVIDED THE MUCH NEEDED HELP THAT I NEEDED!!!
I DID THE PROCESS OF RESETTING MY IPOD TOUCH AND IT WORKED PERFECTLY! AS IF I WAS THE ASSOCIATE IN THE APPLE STORE..IT WAS THE PERFECT SOLUTION TO A FORGOTTEN PASSWORD PROBLEM!
IF ITS LOCKED AND YOU FORGOT YOUR PASSWORD..HERES YOUR PRAYER ANSWERED!
UNLOCK THE PHONE..I KNOW ITS LOCKED BUT THE SCREEN LOCK..DO NOT CONNECT THE USB CORD INTO THE COMPUTER JUST YET..
HOLD THE HOME BUTTON DOWN FOR ABOUT FIVE SECONDS
WHILE HOLDING THE HOME BUTTON..HOLD THE POWER BUTTON DOWN
WHEN THE APPLE LOGO SHOWS..LET GO OF THE POWER BUTTON FIRST..WAIT TWO SECONDS..THEN LET GO OF THE HOME BUTTON
PRESS AND HOLD THE HOLD BUTTON AND WAIT FOR THE SCREEN TO POP UP AS APPLE LOGO AND THE USB CORD CONNECT TO ITUNES
IF IT DOESNT WORK..DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN..IT SHOULD WORK..TRUST ME
AFTER THAT..CONNECT THE IPOD TO THE COMPUTER..IT SHOULD POP UP AND ASK YOU TO RESTORE FACTORY SETTINGS.
ALTHOUGH YOU LOSE ALL YOUR INFORMATION AND DATA..
YOU WILL HAVE YOUR IPOD UP AND RUNNING AGAIN..
OH I ALMOST FORGOT..WHEN YOU PLUG THE IPOD UP TO THE COMPUTER..IF IT SAYS BLAHBLAH..LOCKED…DO THE HOLDING DOWN OF THE BUTTONS..LIKE I SAID AT THE TOP
U NEED TO GET TO THE SCREEN ON YOUR IPOD WHERE THE USB CORD IS FACING TO ITUNES…FROM THAT SCREEN YOU SHOULD KNOW YOUR WAY…
THE OTHER GUYZ WHO EXPLAINED IT MADE IT ALOT SIMPLER..
I HOPE YOU UNLOCK AND RESTORE YOUR IPODS..THEIR EXPENSIVE..LOTS OF LUCK!

  121. by LAYDEE SJ, on May 28 2009 @ 2:29 am

    OH..FELIX IS HIS NAME

Thank you Chris, I forgot my password and did a backup restore and it worked without deleting any of my files.
    Thanks so much!
    :)
Oh and every body who forgot their password and doesn’t want to lose songs or anything When you connect to your computer when your ipod is disabled, instead of clicking restore, right-click on your ipod in the menu bar and select backup if restore from backup is not there then right click again on your ipod and click restore from backup. This only works if you are using the computer you normally use to sync because it will have the backup on it.

  149. by maria, on August 26 2009 @ 8:52 pm

the passcode lockout thing happened to mine too, just Hold down the power and home keys down for about 10 seconds each while plugged into itunes. When the screen goes black, release the power button but keep holding the home key until itunes says. We have detected an itouch in recovery mode.

From there you can restore as normal via iTunes.

It is amazing how many people complain of the same problem but fail to spend a few minutes reading the advice given in various places in this chain.

If it helps read number 5, follow Sammy’s simple steps and you be smiling again in no time. MY eleven ten year did and his ipod is back on track.

    Cheers Sammy

man i tried everything i read i can never get it to start my 8gb itouch but notin works the screen says ipod is disabled connect to itunes and when i do it says its lock by a passcode i tried pressing and holdin the top and home buttons hundreds of times how long does it take i waited for 10 or more minutes and nothing ever happens please help me fix this.

  178. by Mads, on November 15 2009 @ 3:01 am

    thanks so much.
the one that worked for me is…

    1. plug your ipod into the computer and open itunes. it will say something like “cant connect with computer put in passcode or something” but ignore that, leave that window up on the screen.

    2. hold down the lock button on top of the ipod and the home button at the same time until the apple logo comes up and then when the apple logo comes up let go of the lock button and just hold the home one.

    3. shortly the ipod will display itunes and the connecting cord and on ur screen u will have the option to restore factory settings. click that.

all your data will be erased, but at least your ipod will work :)

    thats what worked for me.
    thanks everyone

    Forgotten your iPhone Passcode?
If you have forgotten your iPhone’s Passcode you will need to restore your phone via iTunes.
But first you have to put your phone into the restore mode which is a slightly fiddly process.
Plug your iPhone into your PC or Mac with the USB cable
Press and hold the power button at the top and then slide to power off the iPhone
Press the power button to power the iPhone on and keep it held while simultaneously pressing the home button
After a few seconds a yellow alert triangle will appear and the iPhone will say it is iPhone Restore Mode.
Open up iTunes and click on the Summary tab
Click on Restore to restore your iPhone. This will reset all your iPhone’s setting to the factory defaults, including the Passcode.
You should then follow the steps above to activate the Passcode with a memorable number

i had this problem and have sorted it out,you need to hold the top button and the front button together till the apple appears on the screen then let the top button go whilst still holding down the front button,it will say connect to itunes, so plug your lead from ipod to pc and sign into itunes where it will prompt you to restore, do that and its sorted, i did it and it worked, although it took me 8 attempts because the help on here was misleading. hope this helps,if you still have a problem then email me and i will help you if i can…. cheryldods@hotmail.com.

All, just want to share my experience as I just successfully restored my daughter’s ipod touch 8gb. She forgot her passcode and has tried so many combinations as she could think of but failed. The original computer that we used to sychronize the ipod failed to restore popping up with a connection error. I just download the itunes onto a different laptop and the error did not occur and I successfully restored the ipod. For those of you who had the similar issue, maybe you can try a differnt computer (could be an coincidence but I want to share). There followings are what you need to do:
    1) Down load the itunes on a differnt laptop.
    2) Connect the ipod to the computer.
    3) hold the power and the home button at the same time until it goes black and release the power button but continue to hold the home until the itunes pops up a message saying “detection the ipod in recovery mode”
    4) click the restore button on the itunes, and a normal restore window appears, accept it to confirm to restore to factory setting.
    5) it takes about 10 min to restore to factory setting and unlock you ipod.
    6) I will try to use the original laptop to synch the ipod and restore all the files. Good luck everyone!

    1. connect ipod to comuter while ipod says to connect to itunes

2.hold sleep and home until ipod shuts off. then keep holding until ipod turns on.

    3. at that point let go of sleep but still hold the home.

    4. keep holding home until ipod is fully into recovery mode.

If you’re so concerned about losing your music, go find the sharepod program and backup your music to your computer! You can put it back into your library once you’re absolutely sure it’s on your computer.

My daughter lost her ipod for the last 3 months. We finally found it and now she can’t remember her passcode. She hasn’t been syncing it correctly, so we’re backing up her music and will start from scratch once we reset it.

    What TomTom said was correct:
    iPod Touch -

Press and hold the SLEEP and HOME buttons at the SAME TIME for 10 seconds or until the Apple Logo appears.

Let go of the SLEEP button and wait until the USB cable appears coming from the Logo.

Once this happens, check iTunes because you should be reset.

    conect to itunes
press sleep and home at the same time
hold till it shuts off, but do not let go of the buttons.
the ipod should turn back on while the buttons r still held
when this happens, only let go of the sleep button on the top
keep the home held in till the ipod shows the itunes lodo plus usb cord
then you should unplug the iPod and plug it back in
All u have to do from there is restore
Have fun with ur Ipod =)

    BEST ANSWER AWARD:

IF YOU HOLD IN THE IPOD’S
    1.TOP SLEEP BUTTON
    &
    2.BOTTOM SQUARE/CIRCLE HOME BUTTON

FOR A DURATION OF A FULL IPOD RESTART (APPROX: 1MIN)

YOU WILL NOTICE: YOUR IPOD WILL SHOW
    1.iTUNES DESKTOP ICON
    &
2.USB CORD POINTING AN ARROW UP TOWARD THE ICON

THEN WAIT FOR YOUR PC TO RECOGNIZE THIS AS YOU HAVE ALREADY PLUGGED IN YOUR IPOD.

THE COMPUTER WILL THEN ASK YOU IF YOU WANT TO RESTORE.
    SAY YES/OK/ACCEPT/ETC… DO IT.

IT IS THE ONLY ONLY ONLY WAY TO GET YOUR PASSCODE DELETED AND TO GET THE IPOD ACTIVATED ONCE MORE.

THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM JUSTIN M. – APPLE TECH.

  248. by kathryn, on January 23 2010 @ 7:32 pm

all that comes up on my ipod is a usb plug with an arrow point to the itunes desktop icon. Itunes reads that my ipod and when i press restore. A notification comes up saying “itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet.”
ive checked the LAN connection as well.

You have to have your ipod connected to the computer, and your computer has to be connected to the internet ALL BEFORE you even begin attempting a restore.

The ipod then needs time to restore. Approx 30 min depending on the amount of files you put on the ipod touch.

    So BE PATIENT. lol

I tried resetting it, yet my iPod still won’t even come on. when I plug it into my computer and it doesn’t even show a connection. is it fried or is there something else I can try?

My ipod touch says its disabled and it says to connect to itunes, ok so I did that… then in a little sign on my computer; it said itunes cannot connect to my ipod because it is locked. You must enter your password before it can connect to itunes and I can’t do that because if my ipod is disabled than I can’t enter my password or do anything… please help me coz it not mine but it my boss ipod!! (:

got the 8gb ipod touch about a week ago. after jailbreak and many restore sessions , original apps like i-tunes/ i-tunes store/ and you-tube no longer can connect. the pc has newest i-tunes version plus ipod 3.13 update and every time i attempt to gain access to itunes store there is a #11556 error code. run i-tunes diagnostics showing no problems with network connections. actually connects to apple and itunes for updates and restores properly however i-pod still cannot access i-tune/i-tunes apps/ or you-tube. and the pc running windows i-tunes still gives #11556 error when attempting to access store????? tried lots of forums and many different prosesesses including and not limited to soft/hard spring, reboot, and restore???
