Prevent Users From Running Certain Programs
Posted on Nov 26, 2007 under Windows Tips |Do you have problems with users running programs like AOL Instant Messenger, iTunes or Kazaa? Here’s how to use Group Policy to prevent users from running certain programs.
1. Click START>RUN and type GPEDIT.MSC
2. The Group Policy Editor appears.
Click on the plus sign next to User Configuration
then Administrative Templates
then System
and double-click the policy Don’t run specified Windows applications

3. Set the policy to Enabled, then click Show…

4. Click Add… to add the programs you would like to prevent the user from running. Use the name of the full file such as AIM.EXE or ITUNES.EXE

From now on the user will get a message “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.” when he tries to run the programs you added.

Note that this will only block that particular name of a process from running. Thus, if a person renames the application, they can get it to work again.
