I chat with people regularly on Google Talk. I don’t like that my chat messages get stored automatically forever. Here’s how to disable the storing of chats in Gmail.

For users of the Google Talk client application in Windows

1. In Google Talk click the Settings link in the upper right part of the screen.

GoogleTalk - Settings

2. Click Chat on the left column.

3. Check the option for Don’t save chat history in my Gmail account.

GoogleTalk - Don't save chat history in my Gmail account

Doing this will make it where Google Talk will not save the messages in your personal email account. What about the people that you are chatting with? If you don’t want your chats saved in the Gmail accounts of others, you will want to Go off the record.

To do this, click on the arrow in the upper right corner of the chat window and choose Go off the record.

GoogleTalk - Go off the record

This setting will be saved forever until you revert back and select Stop chatting off the record.

For users of Google Talk in Gmail

1. While in Gmail, select Settings in the upper right part of the screen.

Gmail Settings

2. Click Chat and check Don’t save chat history in my Gmail account.

Gmail - Settings - Chat

To prevent your chats from being saved in the Gmail account of the person you are chatting with, click Options and select Go off the record.
