Motorola Droid: Uninstall Apps

You’ll want to regularly take inventory of the apps you have installed on your Verizon Motorola Droid and remove the ones you don’t intend to use in the future. It seems every week, I discover more items that I can easily remove without missing a beat. Getting rid of the clutter provides more internal memory for the Droid to use for other things.

There are a couple of ways you can remove apps from Motorola Droid. I know some owners of the device think that an app is deleted once they remove the icon from the Home screen. While that is the way it works for the Apple iOS, the Android OS works differently. You have to uninstall apps just as you would on a computer, by accessing the proper menus. Here is how to uninstall Market installed and pre-installed apps from your Droid.

Pre-installed apps

Pre-installed apps won’t provide you with an uninstall option using either of the above methods. They are built into the firmware. In some cases, you are able to uninstall updates to the app, but if you want to completely rid your Droid of pre-installed apps such as Facebook and Amazon MP3, you will need to root your Droid. It’s the only way to gain the proper access to remove items that are pre-installed on the phone. You can then remove the pre-installed apps using the Android SDK or a third-party app like Titanium Backup.

Normal menu method

1. From the main screen, press the Menu button.

2. Tap Settings.

3. Tap Applications.

4. Tap Manage applications.

5. Select the application you wish to remove.

6. Tap Uninstall.

7. Tap OK to confirm the app removal.

From the Market

Market installed apps can also be removed from within the Market app.

1. Open the Market app.

2. Tap Menu and select Downloads. Newer versions will have an option for My Apps instead.

3. Select the app in the list.

4. Select Uninstall.

5. Choose OK to confirm the removal of the app.
