Chris Brogan was commenting how the Motorola Droid sometimes makes some strange suggestions for misspelled words. I know that I have sent off plenty of messages that were supposed to contain shorthand words that instead ended up making no sense. This motivated me to disable the auto correction feature. It’s kind of tough, because it comes in handy at times, but in the end it does more harm than good.
1. From the main screen, press Menu.
2. Tap Settings.
3. Tap Language & keyboard.
4. Tap Android keyboard.
5. Uncheck Quick-fixes.
If you use the Droid’s hardware-based keyboard, you’ll also have to perform these steps:
1. From the main screen, press Menu.
2. Tap Settings.
3. Tap Language & keyboard.
4. Tap Built-in keyboard.
5. Uncheck the box for Auto-replace.

I did that to on my XT311 but autocorrect still likes to play with my nerves.
I had to uncheck the auto correct in 3 places on my droid global. once under device keyboard and in 2 places in multi-touch keyboard. It still suggests proper spelling but will not change it. Thank goodness some of the changes it was making were downright nasty!
I’m glad this tutorial helped. They have made it a bit better with the updates, but I’d rather have it turned off.
Thanks for the tip. The auto-correct is indeed annoying.
I’d also recommend checking Settings -> Language & keyboard -> Multi-touch keyboard for related settings. My version of Android also has a ‘Device keyboard’ section at that location, and ‘Auto-correct errors’ had to be disabled there as well.
