Microsoft Outlook: Error “This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.”

When you try to click a link in an email message in Microsoft Outlook 2010, 2007, 2003 or XP, you may get the following error:

This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

This problem can be solved most of the time by setting one of your web browsers as the default. Follow these steps:

1. Open Control Panel.

Win7 Control Panel selection

2. Select Programs.

Win7 Programs selection in Control Panel

2. Choose Set program access and computer defaults.

Win7 set computer access and computer defaults option

3. In the Custom section, choose your preferred web browser, then click OK.

Win7 default web browser setting

Now open Outlook and try to click on a hyperlink to see if you get the “This operation has been canceled due to┬árestrictions┬áin effect on this computer” error message.

Please contact your system administrator.” I am on word 2003. I reset I.E and did what microsoft told me to do for the registry thing. No success. Any ideas?

And what if you have this error in Word 2007 while trying to click on a hyperlink in the Table Of Contents?

And no, I’m not going to switch the default browser….

“This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.”
