The iPhone 5 was released with a brand new 9-pin “Lightning” port that requires a different cable than older Apple devices. This new port doesn’t appear to support a connection to a TV. So how do you connect the iPhone 5 to a TV?
Well, if you’re looking for a solution that involves a cable connection, you are out of luck. You simply cannot connect a cable between the iPhone 5 and your TV at this time. The only thing that is supported is using the AirPlay feature to stream video from the iPhone 5 to an Apple TV box.
Connect iPhone to TV via Cable
You can now attach your iPhone 5 to a TV using the Lightning Digital AV Adapter. You can connect this adapter to your iPhone 5, then connect an HDMI cable between the TV and adapter. Once connected, video will be mirrored on the screen. Audio is also routed to your TV. Most apps work with this setup including Hulu and Netflix. Some apps like HBO Go and NFL Mobile do not allow mirroring.
Connect iPhone to TV via AirPlay
1. From the iPhone, open Photos or Videos depending on the medial you wish to send to your TV.
2. Select the AirPlay icon.
3. Select the Apple TV device from the list. You should be able to select this as long as both devices are on the same wireless network.
That’s it! You are ready to enjoy streaming content from your iPhone 5 to your TV.
