Hard Reset Motorola Droid

You can hard reset your Motorola Droid phone if you want clear all of the data off of the device and start fresh. Here’s how it’s done.

1. Turn the Droid off. If it won’t turn off, take the battery out then place it back in.

2. Open the keyboard and press the X key while pressing and holding Power. The device will power on. Keep holding the buttons down until a yellow triangle appers.

3. Press the Camera and Volume Up buttons at the same time to get to the menu. (I had to press them several times).

4. Use the direction pad to the right of the keyboard to select the Format option.

I seem to be having a problem with the contacts. After NOT logging in with my gmail account, and removing the SD card, two contacts still insist on merging when added in the phone. This can only mean that my phone still has data in it after being hard reset. This is a privacy concern for me. Where is the phone getting the merged contact data from?

Highly recommended. Was thinking of doing this after three months even before my Droid was afflicted with the infinite reboot “red eye of death”

Thank god for the Cloud. All contacts and paid progs reappeared no prob, SD card data intact.

Droid be flying like an F-22 now. All essentials remain.

    Fresh.

Once you reset, do you have to download anything? Or is everything the same as the first day purchased??? Thanks.

  23. by DavidBla, on March 27 2010 @ 6:04 pm

Yes the Droid should remember most of your settings and programs, but not all, assuming you chose the ‘Backup My Settings’ option when you first signed on, and all of your contacts and calendar if you go through those services on gmail and google.

Worked beautifully. Thanks a bunch for the spot on instructions on how to do this. I also had to press the volume up and camera several times, but was easier when I closed the keyboard.

  25. by Mipmap, on March 29 2010 @ 8:05 pm

In regard to the camera + volume button thing:

Push down the volume button FIRST, then press the camera button and the menu appears instantly.

Trying to press them at the same time is probably why the poster had to press them several times. It is volume, then camera.

This only does a factory data wipe? Doesn’t reset to original build???

  27. by Cody, on April 7 2010 @ 8:06 pm

If you get to the exclamation symbol – hold volume up, THEN press the camera button.

If you try to do them at the same time, that doesn’t work.
