Hack to Change Windows XP Home to Windows XP Professional
Posted by Mitch on Nov 19, 2007 under Windows XP Tips | 14 CommentsEnable the features found in Windows XP Professional on your Windows XP Home Edition installation with this hack. It will allow you to turn your Windows XP Home CD into a Windows XP Professional CD.
Note: If your Windows XP CD does not contain Service Pack 2, you might want to Slipstream Your Windows XP CD first as you will not be able to upgrade an installation after using the CD.
1. Copy the root directory and the i386 directory of the WindowsXP CD to your hard drive.
2. Extract the Bootsector of your Windows XP CD. You can use BBIE to do this.
3. Click START–>RUN–>REGEDIT
4. Highlight HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
5. Click FILE–>LOAD HIVE and select the Setupreg.hiv file
This file is located in the i386 folder. Use the one you extracted to your hard drive from your Windows XP CD.
6. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Homekey\ControlSet001\Services\setupdd
7. Edit the DEFAULT key and change the following values:
01 to 00
02 to 00
8. Change the name to the value HOMEKEY to anything.
9. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Homekey\ControlSet001\Services\setupdd
Edit the DEFAULT key and change the following values:
01 to 00
02 to 00
10. Highlight HOMEKEY and select FILE–>UNLOAD HIVE
You can now burn the data on your hard drive to a CD to make a new Windows XP CD. Then use the CD to install Windows XP. Be sure to make the CD bootable. You can use the instructions here to help you do that.

I used this hack and it worked great. But when it installed SP# I could no longer log on. I had to un install SP3 in safe mode to use the PC again.
Strange, step 6-7 and step 9 same it repeated.
Is it gonna to work? I Guess i try it, my laptop come with home i don’t like it.

This guide may be really usefull if you’ve the need to install a pro and you’ve only an home edition an empty cd recorder a and no interne.
Otherwhise I suppose that if you buy an home or you buy a pc with an home edition use the plusses of a pro edition for free is no so bad.
When you’re used to be a technician as me, happen to be in this situation several times.

Wow… I am always amused when people attempt to be helpful and answer a question that has already been answered with the exact same answer that they were going to propose. Geez guys, get a grip. The answer is right there under your noses, the list of posts is not long, you can tell me that you didn’t see the answer already posted. It doesn’t make you cooler by posting the same answer a 2nd and 3rd and 4th time. It makes you look like a tool.

Hmm why don’t you just download a copy of XP Pro student edition from TPB? Either way illegal deeds will be done, however my way is much simpler =P
Interesting, I’ve never seen this hack before. Nice, although I just got a copy of Windows XP Professional with SP2 to save yourself the hassle, still cool nonetheless.
