You get the following error when you try to install a Printer in Windows.

Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running.

1. Press Window key + R to open the Run dialog Start and type services.msc and click OK.

2. Double-click the Printer Spooler service, and then change the startup type to Automatic. This sets the Spooler service to start automatically when you restart the computer. Click OK.

3. Restart the computer and try to install the printer again.

If that doesn’t work, the problem could be related to corrupted printer drivers that are installed on the computer. Try uninstalling all printer software from the computer and start from scratch. This may include PDF writer or faxing software as well. Anything listed in the Control Panel under Printers & Faxes I would do away with. If there is any software installed for other printers in Add/Remove Programs I would uninstall it all. Clean out everything possible that might be hanging the Printer Spooler service. Obtain updated software from your printer manufacturers and reinstall only the items you need.

I see I’m not the only one having printer problems with vista. Microsoft should be ashamed to force another OS on us pc users that is defective and complicated.

Thanks so much for your post (http://www.technipages.com/fix-for-the-print-spooler-service-is-not-running-error.html). I realized I had disabled the service for my old Lexmark printer in msconfig. It must’ve latched itself to the spool service. My printer was up and running in less than 5 minutes!

if you are unable to start the print spooler service then you would have to double click on it and then click on the dependencies tab in print spooler properties box.
check the dependencies and make sure that the services for the dependencies are started.
    that worked for me

    Good luck,

Printer has been working and now an error message appeared saying printer spooler is not running. In frustration I removed the printer hardware and reinstalled it from the disk. It now says it can’t find a driver!

I am not sure but I had the same problem saying spooler is not running. I found the solution was that I had to add my laptop to my Mcaffee trusted Ip address. once I did this no problems. I hope it helps. you can test this by disabling Mcaffee.

Your instructions aren’t complete for some people.  After step#2, they should find the LexBce Server in the Services window and double click on it. Then change the startup type to Automatic (if is set for something else)and then press OK. Next they should find the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) in the Services window and repeat what you did for the LexBce Server (Automatic startup and press OK). Last they should find the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locater and insure it is set for Automatic startup and hit OK. Then restart the computer and try reinstalling the printer. Note: I didn’t have this “Spooler not running” problem until after installing Windows Service pack #3 to my Windows XP operating system……
