Fix for “The print spooler service is not running” Error

Some users may get a “print spooler service” error when you trying to install a printer in Windows that says:

Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running.

To solve this error, try the following steps.

1. Press Window key + R to open the Run dialog Start and type services.msc and click OK.

2. Double-click the Printer Spooler service, and then change the startup type to Automatic. This sets the Spooler service to start automatically when you restart the computer. Click OK.

3. Restart the computer and try to install the printer again.

If that doesn’t work, the problem could be related to corrupted printer drivers that are installed on the computer. Try uninstalling all printer software from the computer and start from scratch. This may include PDF writer or faxing software as well. Anything listed in the Control Panel under Printers & Faxes I would do away with. If there is any software installed for other printers in Add/Remove Programs I would uninstall it all. Clean out everything possible that might be hanging the Printer Spooler service. Obtain updated software from your printer manufacturers and reinstall only the items you need.

Hello I tried everything and I really don’t know what else to do? As soon as I try to install the driver, the printer spooler turnes itself off. I have done all that was listed on your site. Thank you.

I inherited my laptop from a friend who used printers on wireless network, not an attached printer, which is what I’m trying to install. During install, I get “print spooler not running”. I’ve checked the setting for the print spooler, and it is set on automatic. As per instructions on this page, I also checked the printer/fax program folder and it is empty. There is a Uniprint program installed. Should I remove this?

Spooler not started error. This worked for me.
    Goto control panel
    administrative tools
    services
check to see if printer spooler is started or not, right click to start if not, also check if Remote procedure Call is started also (RPC also need to be started for ptr spooler to run) right click to start if not.

    1. Press Window key + R to open the Run dialog Start and type services.msc and click OK.

    2. Double-click the Printer Spooler service, and then change the startup type to Automatic. This sets the Spooler service to start automatically when you restart the computer. Click OK.

I recently reinstalled my printer and was having the same problem. It seems my print spooler was disabled. Anyway, in step 2 above there may be a step missing:

After selecting Automatic, Apply, Ok, the service must be restarted. In the same box under Service Status, click start. Let me know if this works. Try to run your printer, if it still doesn’t work, try restarting your computer or reinstalling your printer.

My printer worked great until I installed Billy Bob Gates’ latest pile of updates. That killed the print spooler, removed both of my printers and won’t allow me to install printers.

Tried your fix – Billy Bob laughed and said “Send money”.

I am not sure but I had the same problem saying spooler is not running. I found the solution was that I had to add my laptop to my Mcaffee trusted Ip address. once I did this no problems. I hope it helps. you can test this by disabling Mcaffee.

Printer has been working and now an error message appeared saying printer spooler is not running. In frustration I removed the printer hardware and reinstalled it from the disk. It now says it can’t find a driver!

  33. Kingsley Vincent says

if you are unable to start the print spooler service then you would have to double click on it and then click on the dependencies tab in print spooler properties box.
check the dependencies and make sure that the services for the dependencies are started.
    that worked for me

    Good luck,

    - King

I see I’m not the only one having printer problems with vista. Microsoft should be ashamed to force another OS on us pc users that is defective and complicated.
