Enable/Disable Automatic Updates in Firefox

I don’t like Firefox constantly updating the version or the Add-ons all by itself without my knowledge. I like to disable this. You can enable or disable this feature with these steps.

1. Click Firefox > Options > Options or if you have the Menu Bar enabled, select Tools > Options.

Firefox Options menu

2. Click on the Advanced option along the top.

3. Click on the Update tab.

4. Uncheck the boxes under Automatically check for updates to: to disable the automatic updates. Check them if you wish for them to be enabled.

Alternately you may choose to select the Ask me what I want to do option under the When updates to Firefox are found: section.

    We have an Application that can only run on Firefox 17.0.5 ESR and we have different users logging in to test machines. So it was driving me crazy until found this article. Uninstalled the updated version re-installed 17.0.5 and I just changed the Channel-perfs.js file from pref(“app.update.channel”, “release”); to pref(“app.update.channel”, “None”);
    This file is in the Mozilla Firefox\Defaults\Pref folder
    So it was looking at the None Channel which does not exist and tells us that version 17.0.5 is up to date.
    All good!

    You can also use a firewall to prevent communication with mozilla.com, mozilla.org, firefox.com and firefox.org. That pretty well stops it cold no matter what.

    Exit Firefox.
    Cut the folder Updates and the files platform.ini, updater.exe, updater.ini, updates.xml and update-settings.ini and paste them in another folder so that you can always go back to the original situation.
    Start Firefox.

    Problems?
    Exit Firefox.
    Restore forementioned folder and files.
    Start Firefox.

    If you are still getting the update request even after you have turned the updates off then go to the folder below

    C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates

    Then delete any thing which isn’t the following files

    1. Update.exe
    2. Update.ini
    3. Update.mar

    Restart firefox and enjoy no nagging.

    Perfect Tim!
    I renamed it instead of deleting in case I want to go back. I work in a very static environment, so it’s great to not have to deal with update checks I don’t need. AND… startup is SO much faster.

    Thanks!

    To disable the automatically check for updates to firefox , Addons and Search Engines, add the below lines in pref.js which is available in the “%appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\.default\”

    user_pref(“app.update.enabled”, false);,
    user_pref(“browser.search.update”, false);
    user_pref(“extensions.update.enabled”, false);

    I found a solution to this if no one else has. Delete updater.exe in the Mozilla Firefox folder. You’ll get an error message the next time you start FireFox, but after that, it’s all good.

    For firefox 6, unchecking all options under advanced/update options, still allows automatic updates. Anything else to try other than chucking firefox?
    Thanks,

    What can you do when you follow these instructions and Firefox keeps updating itself automatically.
