Desktop Icons Display Incorrectly or Look Black or Gray in Color
Posted on Nov 18, 2007 under Windows Tips |If strange things are happening with your icons, you may need to delete the icon cache file.
Perform the following steps:
1. Hold down F5 while booting up Windows to start up in Safe Mode.
2. Open MY COMPUTER and ensure that you are able to view hidden files.
If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, select TOOLS–>FOLDER OPTIONS–>VIEW and check SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
If you are using Windows 95, 98, or NT, select VIEW–>OPTIONS and Check SHOW ALL FILES
3. Find the icon cache file:
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Iconcache.db
Windows 98/ME/2000
C:\Windows\ShellIconCache
4. Delete the file.
5. Restart the computer.
