Create Rounded Corners With Paint.NET
Posted by Mitch on Dec 06, 2007 under Software Tips | 13 CommentsSo you want to do rounded corners using Paint.NET? You must learn how. I mean your web site would be so not in style without images with rounded corners! I’m going to show you the easiest method I know about. I think it’s easier than using Photoshop to do it.
Here we have a nice picture of downtown Chicago. I want to give it rounded corners.

First I want to add a new layer by clicking Layers > Add New Layer.

Now select the Rounded Rectangle Tool. The color doesn’t really matter.

In the upper left corner, select to Draw Filled Shape.

Draw the rounded rectangle over the area you would like to keep for your rounded corners image.

Use the Magic Wand to select the area of the rounded rectangle.

Click Edit > Invert Selection.

Now the area outside of the rounded square will be selected.

Select Layers > Delete Layer to delete the layer we made our rounded square on.

The area outside of the rounded square will still be selected.

Simply press Delete on your keyboard and you are left with your image, now with rounded corners.

Interesting… Great info. Thanks!
Just use GIMP, its a more featured free editor in my opinion and allows you to adjust exactly how rounded your corners are
does anyone know how to get the corners even more round? This was very useful but the corners are still a little sharp. I’m wanting a more rounded look!
This was very useful. Saved me a lot of time.
WOW !!!!
Thanks for this … cant really use PS at work, so i am forced to use Paint.Net … really starting to appreciate this MS tool now !!
Bob’s tip is really good too !
To get smooth round corners and even more!
- make a white layer with a black rounded rectangle (or circle or whatever!)
- add your photo on a new layer, it will appear in the top layer
- in the layer window, select this top layer and show the properties.
- then you can select blending mode = lighten
This results in your photo having nice rounded corners and smooth without jagged or having to manually blur it.
Great post. You saved me a lot of time!
u can blur it
thanks works fine, but the “corners” are indeed a bit jagged………..any way to make them smooth?
[...] corners. It can be done using the free image editor Paint.NET. There is also a step-by-step article here if you prefer not to watch the video. [...]
Wow this is fantast truly. Thanks a mill.
Hello,
the instructions are great but I see jagged round corners – any way to get them AA?
