knr writes “Here is a quick and easy tip that can come in pretty handy if you find yourself always wanting to access a specific location on your hard drive using a command prompt. In the following example, I will create a shortcut to a command prompt window that opens using my desktop as the root. This can be handy when you want to work with files that you are using on your desktop (e.g. that you just downloaded from Firefox, etc.).
- Right-click in the open space of your desktop and click New->Shortcut.
- For the location, type or copy and paste the following:
%windir%\system32\cmd.exe /k
- Click Next.
- For the name, type something descriptive, like “Command Prompt at Desktop.”
- Click Finish.
- Now right-click on the new shortcut and choose Properties.
- Change the “Start In” field to whatever directory you want the command prompt to start in. In this case, we want it to start in my desktop, so I would type in:
"C:\Documents and Settings\knrDesktop\"
Be sure to include the quotation marks, and of course you would need to customize this file path to your own system (i.e. replacing “knr” with your own Windows username).
- You can assign a shortcut key if you like, as well as configure other options. Once you have finished, click OK.
- (Optional) Click and drag the shortcut that you created onto your Quick Launch toolbar, or put it anywhere you prefer so that you can access it quickly.
That’s it! Now, whenever you want a command prompt window at the location that you specified in the shortcut, just click the icon (or use your shortcut key, if you defined one) and you are in business! “

Make a portal or simple blog using these free open source CMS downloads.
Joomla
Joomla is a is a rebranded release of Mambo. It’s very easy to use and can be used by a person that doesn’t know anything about coding. Almost anything is configurable or editable through the included admin panel and there are tons of third party modules and templates available for it.
Pros: Large community of users .
Cons: Sometimes difficult to locate a feature or setting. Slow load time.
Drupal
The software from the now defunct drop.com evolved into Drupal. Drupal can be morphed into almost anything you want it to be. For example, there is a way to make Drupal into a site like Digg.com. It’s normally used for community driven web sites such as schools, projects, or company intranets.
Pros: Large community of users. Flexibility.
Cons: Takes a while to learn. Not as secure as other CMS’s.
Pligg
Pligg evolved from code from the site mename. It allows you to make a site similar to Digg where users can rate web pages. However, Pligg can be used for almost any type of article web site. Customizing the templates and getting your site customized has proven to be a chore for many of its users though.
Pros: Very flexible. Simple to edit and learn.
Cons: Low on features. Hard to find templates or modules.

After getting off my plane at O’Hare Airport in Chicago, I came across this nice environmental kiosk provided by the City of Chicago. It was blue screened for everybody in the airport to see.
Sorry for the bad quality of the pics, I used a cheap camera phone, but I think you get the idea.

Working the helpdesk can get slow at times. There are plenty of times to browse the web and fool around, but the trick is not to let the boss know. You must look busy at all times. Here are some tips on how to make yourself look swamped while looking for your favorite Barry Manilow songs on Limewire at work.
1. “What are you working on?”
Always be prepared to answer this question. Explain that a server is having intermittent problems or perhaps the dummy on the 9th floor locked his password out again. Anything that makes sense.

If you installed software or a driver in Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and now your computer fails to load. You may want to try booting your computer using the Last Known Good Configuration.
To do this, follow these steps:
Start your computer and wait until the moment where the BIOS screen disappears and press F8 repeatedly. This can be tricky because you want to press F8 before right as Windows starts loading. If you see the Windows logo appear, you know you’ve missed your chance and you will have to restart and try again.
If you did it correctly, the Windows Advanced Options menu should appear. You can then select the Last Known Good Configuration option.
Then you can continue to boot into Windows.
This will fix problems with the registry, but if the problem is related to a corrupt file, it will not help.

Be wary of email or phone calls asking you to dial a number with an area codes of 809, 284 or 876.
Some companies in the British Virgin Islands have been set up to try to take money from unsuspecting people using the area codes of 809, 284 or 876. Some people have been billed as much as $2,400 per minute. Unlike 900 numbers, these numbers do not warn the caller of these charges.
The scam begins when these companies send email or make phone calls telling a person to call about the death of a relative, overdue bills, prize notifications, etc.
