iPhone Tips

It gets annoying when you just want to use the Camera application in the iPhone, and it keeps asking you:

“Camera” would like to use your current location

You can disable this message with the following steps:

1. From the Home screen select Settings.

2. Select General.

3. Set Location to Off.

So you open up Safari on your iPhone 3G and find that the Address Bar is missing. What could you have done to cause this? Who knows, but here’s how to bring it back:

Hold down Shift + Apple then and press the | key (above the Enter key).

or

Select the View > Show Address Bar.

If that doesn’t work, try this:

Select View > Customize Address Bar… and drag the Address Bar back to the top of the Safari screen.

I had an MPG video that I made with my camera. I wanted to play it on my iPod Touch. So I imported it into iTunes, converted it, then tried to sync it. The video made it over to my iPod Touch, but it’s not there. It has somehow disappeared and I cannot play it on the device.

Apparently if certain fields are not filled in in the video Info screen, the video will not appear on the iPod Touch or iPhone 3G. If you have this problem, try the following:

1. In iTunes, right-click/Ctrl-click the Video and select Get Info.

2. Click the Video tab.

3. Fill in every field on that screen with at least some information. Don’t leave anything blank.

4. Resync your video file and then try to view the video on the device.

Are you missing the Safari icon on the Home screen of your iPhone 3G or iPod Touch? Here are some things to check.

1. Make sure you didn’t drag it to another Home screen. You can flick your finger left or right to switch between Home screens.

2. Make sure there isn’t a restriction on the application. If your employer provided you with your device they may have done this. Check under Select Settings > General > Restrictions. Make sure Safari is set to On.

3. If none of the above works. It’s time to try a Restore.

  • Connect your device to your computer and launch iTunes.
  • Select your device under Devices.
  • Select Summary.
  • Select Restore.

Hopefully after trying these steps your Safari icon will be restored to the Home screen of your iPhone or iPod Touch.

I had a problem where my iPhone 3G wasn’t notifying me when new email arrived with a sound notification. I made sure the volume on the unit was up and that the Ring/Silent switch on the left side of the unit was set to Ring, but it still didn’t work. I also checked under Settings > Sounds to make sure New Mail was set to On.

This looks like it’s a common issue, and the thing that fixes it most times is performing a hard reset on the iPhone 3G. This worked for me, hope it works for you.

You can make a shortcut directly to a web page on the Home screen of your iPhone 3G. These are called Web Clips. To make one, follow these steps:

1. While on the site you wish to make a Web Clip for, press the + icon at the bottom of the screen.

2. Tap the Add to Home Screen.

3. Edit the name of the clip.

4. Tap Add.

If you grow tired of the Web Clip, there is a way to delete it as well.

I experienced a strange problem with my iPhone this week where it refused to vibrate. I wasn’t sure what to do with it. I went under Settings > Sound and made sure Vibrate was set to On, but it still wouldn’t vibrate.

Luckily I came across this post. It actually suggests whacking the iPhone on the back. Apparently the spinny thing inside that makes it vibrate gets stuck from time to time. Mine started working when I made it start to vibrate by calling my own phone while tapping it gently at the same time.

Change what happens when you double-tap the Home button on your iPhone 3G.

1. Select Settings from the Home screen.

4. On this screen you can choose whether double-tapping your Home button brings you to iPod functions or takes you to Phone Favorites.

How to enable and pair a Bluetooth device to your iPhone 3G.

3. Select General.

4. Select Bluetooth.

5. Set Bluetooth to On.

When you’re trying to take a picture with the iPhone 3G, it’s hard to press and release the Shutter button without getting a photo that is slightly blurred. This happens especially with self-portraits.

Not many people may know that the iPhone actually takes the picture when the Shutter button is released, not when it is pressed. So next time you are getting ready to hold your iPhone out and point it at yourself to take a picture, place your finger on the Shutter button first, position yourself for taking the picture, then release the button. Presto! You will have a blur free picture taken.

iPhone 3G: Save Image in Safari

When using Safari on your iPhone 3G, many people don’t know that there is a way to save the images that appear on web pages.

1. Touch and hold the image that you wish to save.

2. Select Save on the menu that appears.

The image is then placed into your Camera Roll.

You may encounter a problem with your iPod Touch or iPhone where the time shows up incorrectly after syncing with your computer.

To try to solve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Disconnect your iPod from the computer.

2. Ensure the time and date on the computer is correct.

3. In iTunes, go to Edit > Preferences > Devices.

4. Under Device Backups, select your device in the list.

5. Click Remove Backup.

6. Close iTunes.

7. Reopen iTunes. Reconnect the iPod Touch or iPhone.

A new backup should be created and should solve the issue.

When typing in Safari, iPhone learns suggestions over time. This history list can get large and annoying. Here’s how to clear these word suggestions out.

1. Open Safari.

2. Tap the book icon in the lower-right corner of the screen.

3. Select Clear.

iPhone 3G owners may wonder how to know exactly when the device is fully charged. The icon in the upper-right corner of the screen will show a lightning bolt for what seems like an eternity. When the iPhone is completely charged, this icon will change to a plug.

The iPhone’s auto correct feature comes in handy when typing certain words that contain apostrophes. When you need an apostrophe, instead of using the additional keyboard, you can type the final letter of the word an additional time and it will trigger the auto-correct feature to add an apostrophe where needed.

  • Typing welll will correct to we’ll.
  • Typing weree will correct to we’re.

There are some words that work slightly differently. For example, typing itsa will auto-correct to it’s.

iPhone 3G: Change Bonjour Name

Q: How do I change the name of my iPhone 3G name in Bonjour?

How do you enable and use the Caps Lock feature on the iPhone 3G?

1. From the Main Menu, select Settings.

2. Select General.

3. Select Keyboard.

4. Ensure that Enable Caps Lock is set to On.

Now when you need to use this feature, simply double-tap the Shift button on the keyboard. Pressing Shift again will disable it.

Q: How do I delete a Web Clip from the Home screen of my iPhone?

A: Press and hold any icon until they wiggle. Now an X should be available. Tap the X on the Web Clip to delete it.

How many times have you started a long iPhone 3G backup only to find that somebody has called you and canceled the entire process? You can prevent this from happening. Just take the SIM card out of the iPhone 3G. If you have another phone that uses SIM cards available, you can put the SIM card in that phone while performing the backup. Finish your backup, then when it’s done, pop it back in.
