Can’t get to MySpace from work because it’s blocked? Here’s something you can try.
Many of my friends are constantly searching for ways to get to MySpace from their workplace because they have been blocked. MySpace is the most commonly blocked web site on the net. I have recently introduced them all to proxy servers such as the one here.
A proxy server like this one can communicate with MySpace, or any other site and redirect everything back to you instead of your computer directly trying to access MySpace or whatever site you like. Thus allowing your computer to see pages at MySpace.com. Unless your work has the proxy server address blocked, you usually can usually use this method. You can search on Google for “myspace proxy” and find a great deal of other proxy servers you can use as well.
Another method I have told people to use is to get a remote control account such as GoToMyPC account or a free LogMeIn account. Using such a service allows users to access their home computer from work. The home computer then can be used to get to MySpace since your workplace can’t block the web sites your home computer visits. In addition to being able to view MySpace pages, the remote control software will allow you to access all the resources on your home PC as well.

How to redirect a certain web page a visitor is viewing to the root directory or home page of your site.
Insert the following code into your .htaccess file in the root directory of your web site:
rewritecond %{THE_REQUEST} ^.*\/index\.html?
RewriteRule ^(.*)index\.html?$ http://www.technipages.com/$1 [R=301,L]
OR
rewritecond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /.*index\.html?\ HTTP/
RewriteRule ^(.*)index\.html?$ http://www.technipages.com/$1 [R=301,L]
This example redirects users that visit http://www.technipages.com/index.html back to the root directory of my site at http://www.technipages.com. Of course you will have to change this code to reflect what you wish to do with your web site.

What’s this new Free Credit Report every 12 months thing all about?
There has been a blitz of advertisements on television, radio and the internet recently for web sites claiming to offer free credit reports. Many of them though do not offer the same information you can get elsewhere. Others are even scams to get your personal information.
As of September 1, 2005, free credit reports have been accessible to all Americans. The amendment to the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies to provide a free credit report once every 12 months if requested.
Which web site should I use for my free credit report?
The three nationwide consumer reporting companies have set up one central website at http://www.annualcreditreport.com. On the site, you will be provided credit reports by Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union. Don’t expect to get your credit score for free also though, that costs extra. Trans Union has the lowest priced credit score report at $5.95. The others offer it for $6.95.
What are the dangers of using a different web site for my credit report?
You’d be giving all of your personal information to a possible rogue entity. Who knows what they will do with it? Some sites will actually give you a free full credit report, but then sell your personal information to advertisers. The result is bombardment with spam, junk mail and telemarketing calls. Others provide a report that’s not very detailed and offer paid services to obtain more information about your credit.
If you’d like to find out more information about your free credit report. Visit the FTC’s web site at http://www.ftc.gov/

“How did these things get on my machine?” This is a common question from victims of spyware. Learning where they come from can prevent your computer from getting infected.
1. Installed Applications You know that program you installed so that you can download MP3’s for free? Spyware installs with most of these types of applications. File sharing programs have a notorious reputation for installing spyware. Applications that add little features to your computer install spyware as well. Some examples are programs that:
- Allow you to add graphics such as smile faces and hearts to your email.
- Track the weather on your desktop.
- Manage your desktop wallpaper or other graphics themes on your computer.
- Video games.
- Applications that claim to clean spyware.
2. Email Just like viruses, spyware can be delivered via email. They usually come as file attachments, but they can also load automatically just by opening the email. Always check that you have the latest updates and patches for your email client.
3. Web Sites Web sites can enable scripts that install spyware on your PC without you even knowing it. Browser developers usually try to combat this with updates, but sometimes users grant permission to the installation without even knowing they are doing so.

What can the people at your company helpdesk see? Most likely everything. Here’s a story that shows the naked truth about what your helpdesk people might be looking at.
I had just joined the helpdesk team of 16 people. I noticed right away there was a lot of time to burn. The helpdesk didn’t spend a lot of its time helping computer users. They mostly browsed the web all day. They would share downloaded movies and various humorous web sites with one another. One day I saw about 5 guys standing around a desk gazing at the computer screen. They were looking at the contents of another employees PC. This particular employee was a woman who decided to purchase a Handspring PDA with a camera. Among the artsy photos she had in there, she also had pictures of herself, naked. How embarrassing. Upon further review, the PDA software had been uninstalled from the PC long ago. However, the data was kept intact as most software uninstalls are designed not to delete data. This woman spent months with this stuff on her PC. Little did she know that the boys up in IT were enjoying her photography almost every day. There are all kinds of things you can find out about a person from getting documents from their PC. Email, forms, pictures, letters to family members, anything on the computer can be found by any IT employee with admin rights. Some people choose to be lazy about items kept on their PC. They say “What do I care if they find a letter I wrote years ago to my mom?” Others don’t know that IT employees can see everything. You need to take notice and responsibility for what’s on your company PC. It can affect your reputation or even get you fired. I have come across documents with social security numbers, maiden names, credit card numbers, and even images with a copy of a drivers license. All of these can be used for identity theft. I’ve seen email to mistresses and email including a sexual dialog. It’s a good thing our IT team wasn’t into blackmail. Read more… »
