Caring for Your Laptop Battery

We’ve talked about cell phone batteries and how to keep their capacity longer. Now we’ll focus on laptops. Laptops use lithium-ion batteries that can also lose their capacity the more they are exposed to heat. They also lose capacity the quicker you discharge them, so the quicker you drain that battery the more damage you are doing to the capacity of the battery.

Here are some tips to help save your batteries’ capacity:

1. Only place the battery in the laptop when you need to charge it or when you are using it. As you know, laptops get very hot, especially when they are plugged in. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you don’t need it.

Laptop Stand2. When you have to use your battery, ensure that the battery compartment stays cool. Usually placing the laptop on a table with a stand or device that keeps it cool helps. If you place it on any type of fabric such as your clothing or furniture it can cause temperatures to rise very high, thus making the laptop and battery very hot.

3. Wait until the laptop has cooled off before placing it inside your laptop bag. Laptop bages are well insulated and it’s not good to trap all that heat inside an area where your laptop is stored.

4. Try to not use applications that discharge your battery at a high rate unless you really have to. This can include watching video, burning DVD’s or playing video games.
