Android: Create Contact Groups
Posted by Mitch on Dec 17, 2009 under Android Tips, Internet Tips | 9 CommentsI own a Motorola Droid smartphone that runs Android OS. It seems there are quite a few people wondering how to create groups for contacts. The manual for most Android phones references this, but doesn’t tell you how to do it.
Well, it looks like there really isn’t a way to do it on the phone. You will have to bring up a Browser (either on your computer or the device) and perform these steps:
1. Login to Gmail.
2. Click Contacts.
3. Click the plus sign with the two heads to create a group.
4. Give the group a name and click OK.
You can add Contacts to groups individually by clicking on the contact, then clicking the Groups button.

I use free app called Contacts GroupU that is very easy to use and will sync with your gmail account. I would rather, obviously have the groups inside of gmail, but this will work.
Worked great!! Thanks for the help!!
All you have to do is follow the steps above. Then afterward on your phone go into your settings menu/account settings and make sure you’re syncing up with your google account. You won’t be able to see the groups in your dialer screen though you can through your sms application. Google really dropped the ball on this organizing feature.
There are apps. A lot of them at the beginning cost money and i am scared to purchase them because im not sure how they will work but i downloaded a free one that allows you to create groups and block calls and texts and stuff. i dont know what all it does but it works in creating groups that you can create a group message but it doesnt organize it in your contacts list. you have to go to this app every time. it is called NetQin Mobile Manager
I’ve been trying so hard to figure this out. I wonder if there is an app for it?
I second TH’s post. I’m looking for a way to create contact groups and sort contacts in to those groups from Android, not from GMail.
It worked, I add groups and manage contacts in Gmail account, and once I sync with my phone I get the contacts in my phone too.
Now I can’t see the groups in my contact list so that I select and then text them!
The only thing this changes is how your contacts are organized in Gmail and some other Google services. But it has nothing to do with Android.
As you can see from the link at the beginning of the article where people are asking about creating groups in Android, they already know how to create groups in Gmail.
This doesn’t solve the problem it says it does.
How do the groups get onto my phone?
